So if we have the 4 games in the opening week and then a full compliment of games the next week, 8 teams will have played 2 and 10 teams one game after round 1…… a bit weird if that’s how they do it.
Def is weird.

Think the AFL said those teams will have an early season bye for other to catch up. Thinking maybe the round before ANZAC day

Yeah that could be an advantage for those 8 teams that play the first week. They could play about 5 games then get a bye then play another 7-8 games and then get another bye. Would be feeling quite fresh mid season I would’ve thought.

Agreed, on the other foot Collingwood and Brisbane finished 5 weeks before teams that didn't make the 8 this season, and will begin the season a week earlier. Doubt it makes a difference but a smaller pre-season may make a difference

Could they be doing this to see how split rounds etc might work for an uneven 19 teams in a few years

I have it on good authority that Essendon will play Collingwood on April 25.

You heard it here first.
I've heard they will also play Richmond on a Saturday Night somewhere around the halfway point of the season.

Gf rematch Easter Thursday obviously.
Funny how commentators and even board members (Bartel @ GWS) have said this is a great idea with the NRL playing in Vegas that weekend, when Vegas is actually the week before!!!

Week 1
is obviously GWS Vs Collingwood and Sydney vs Melbourne
It would make sense for those 4 teams to play each other the next week
so Collingwood vs Sydney and Melbourne vs GWS
with no bye week off
And with Gold Coast vs Richmond and Brisbane vs Carlton week 1. And you'll then have Carlton vs Richmond week 2. That would leave us with Gold Coast vs Brisbane
