Giants push for names on guernseys in 2014

Jeremy Cameron has showed off the jumper the GIANTS hope will soon become part of the AFL.

The GIANTS want to add names to the back of players jumpers for the 2014 season as a way for fans to further connect with the players.

Soccer, cricket, basketball, baseball and American football all identify their players with names on the back as well as numbers.

GIANTS Head Coach Kevin Sheedy says it’s important to make this change to help crowds identify with the players, particularly with the game growing in New South Wales and Queensland.

"We are one of the few sports in the world that don't carry names of players on the backs of jumpers or shirts,” said Sheedy.

Something the skin has floated in the past, and from memory we did have names on guernseys in the NEAFL in 2011? At that time thought it was in lieu of a back sponsor.

2 years too late, imagine if they did it when Izzy Folau was around haha!

Names on the jumpers do make it look very congested but it would make it easier to recognise players.
it's definitely a difficult debate to have.

Bad enough generally, terrible having it competing for space with what's already there.

It'd look better without the Canberra text, less cluttered. Unavoidable though being that the 'Canberra' is essentially a sponsor logo...

I'm not a fan. NRL dropped names a fair while ago (except for State of Origin) and although they just filled the space with another sponsor, I don't think it made that much of a difference. How well will people be able to read those names with players running around? It's not like they stop the game so spectators can read their names.

It's about merchandise sales, and in that light it makes sense.
I am not a fan, although given my other mob are prominently signed centrebet player's names would have to be considered a step up..

Yeah you don't see guernseys with numbers off the rack, it'd be a lot easier to sell a 'Cameron 18' than an '18' if they wanted to sell them pre-numbered...

As a Geelong supporter, I'd have the number 7 on my jumper because I love Paul Couch, Ben Graham and Harry Taylor. You can't put all three names on the jumper, and only having one name on there is disrespectful to the others. Last year Toby Greene wore 35 this year it's 4. Names on jumpers are stupid.
