Universally admired. Genuinely liked. And in a whirlwind month, Wise Guy Sam has become one of the most decorated players in the SFA. A month ago, WGS was plying his trade. Crisp humour, creative responses and the odd joke about his failure to win the EKA Medal. The last few weeks has seen the respected poster become a premiership player, take up a captaincy role with the West Coast Wonders and win the illustrious Mobbs Medal.
Wise Guy Sam does not display the ego that pours its way through the unclenched teeth of other posters. And it is unlikely that his new found accolades will change that. However, WGS certainly takes great enjoyment out of his recent achievements. WGS admits to being very proud of himself after a standout season which also saw him win his clubs best and fairest in a premiership year. "From day one I've strived to be the best and punch above my weight. Unfortunately my off field persona didn't match my on field skills and I went missing in games, too busy thinking about that next media piece or joke. My second season, this one, I've tried to focus more on the game of qooty and make my presence more relevant to the league, whilst still maintaining my off field involvements."
Wise Guy Sam certainly protrudes a sense of modesty. But this modesty should not be confused with a lack of competitiveness, drive and hunger to be the best. Nor should it be assumed that WGS does not understand his new found position in the game. "I appreciate all the support I've had and it makes me want to prove those supporters right. The admiration I have from my 'fans' has ultimately kept me at my best and helped me finish the year as strong as I have. It will keep me focused on the league for a long time."
Many of these supporters came to know and love Wise Guy Sam thanks to his familiar sign off: Your pal, Wise Guy Sam. He dates this back to a match thread against the Hawks in his first season. He got a few positive remarks so he kept it going. beez told WGS that all posters should have "something" about their posting, and WGS was happy to continue a familiar and entertaining sign off. Other aspects of his posting were influenced by ShaunDuggan and ClarkeM, and from outside of his club, Itsmyshow, Gee Dub, Beez and Broken have had a great influence on a poster well on top of his game. He lists the above, along with Eth, Gibbsy and Okeydoke7 (seriously) as his most admired posters from outside of his own club.
It has been a short but incredible journey for Wise Guy Sam. A controversial EKA loss has turned into a bit of a joke, but hurt at the time. "I was disappointed because I brought into my own hype and was expecting it. I got over it pretty quick, losing the EKA was maybe the best thing for me. It pushed me to be better, more focused and the support I got was amazing. Losing also gave me a chance to make many a joke and making people laugh is my fuel. Winning the Mobbs isn't vindication, every 'like' I get might be though."
Wise Guy Sam says that winning the Mobbs Medal is something that will "Go down in SFA History" and was made possible because his posting enabled him to work into a dominant on-field position. But WGS still believes he can go one step better when it comes to posting. Next season, WGS claims that it is balance that will improve. "Learning to balance my posting and move towards Quality over Quantity will keep me posting longer and perhaps even better. Also being a captain is something new to learn and master. In what will be just my 3rd season I will have to lead a club (along with Shaunduggan). This is a huge responsibility and a whole new game but that excites me and I want to one day be considered a great leader. Improvment as a poster will no doubt be judged on my abilities as a captain."
Wise Guy Sam's is a story that writes itself, making my job very easy. He is truly a prototype of "premium quality poster." His humble, subtle, entertaining way has seen him labelled as the Lenny Hayes of the SFA. But now he has a premiership. A best and fairest. He is a captain. And a Mobbs Medallist. His star is on the rise, and not one poster would begrudge him for it. But the man himself is willing to expose his weaknesses. He labels his inability to truly go hard at someone. He admits that "being ruthless isn't me." Perhaps his greatest strength though, is that he doesn't try to be something that he is not. He aims to generate more media in S16, which certainly whets the appetite. I have been around for long enough to suggest that rarely do we come across a poster so unanimously admired. Rarely has a winner been so widely and genuinely toasted by the SFA. And although many would be envious of his achievements in a whirlwind month, nobody could name a poster more deserving. The Season 15 Mobbenfuhrer Medallist. Congratulations, Wise Guy Sam.
