Say if the AFL put you in charge to do the fixture for Round 1 of the 2024 AFL Premiership Season, who would you have to open the season?

Why gold coast?

My fixture:

Collingwood v Brisbane (MCG)
Carlton v Richmond (MCG)
North Melbourne v Melbourne (Marvel)
GWS v Sydney
Adelaide v Port
Eagles v Fremantle
Geelong v St Kilda
Essendon v Hawthorn
Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast

The first game of the year should always be the Grand Finalists of the previous year. It won't be as for some reason the AFL is obsessed with Carlton and Richmond, two teams that have not been interesting in decades, but the AFL persist with it.
Mate check the crowds of each game..

Collingwood v Sydney or Brisbane at the G and you’ll get the biggest crowd between teams from different states of all time.

I’d love to see if we could pretty much fill the G on our own for a H&A game.

Coll v Bris (MCG)
Carlton v Richmond (MCG)
Western Bulldogs v Melbourne (Marvel)
Adelaide v Sydney (Adelaide Oval)
North v Hawthorn (Tas)
Essendon v Geelong (MCG)
Gold Coast v GWS (GC)
Fremantle v Port (Optus)
St. Kilda v West Coast (Marvel)

Thurs - carl v rich. May as well accept it's "tradition"

Fri - coll v gws. Primetime for the premier, prelim rematch, unfurl the flag (in front of the losing team seems harsh, hence GWS). Toby returns the favour on nicky boy and minds are lost.

Sat -> # killer day. No games in vic
Crows v WCE.
Hawks v GCS (tas game)
Bris v Dons - may as well get this one out of the way
Freo v dogs - lobb v freo rd 2

Sun->
Geel v swans (gmhba). '22 gf replay
Melb v Port (G) - battle of the straight sets
Saints v roos (marvel) - cos who cares

We should be at home Round 1 to unfurl the flag and we've been away the last 2 years in R1.

Using the power of deduction it won't be against Carlton or Richmond as they'll play Thursday, won't be Essendon as we'll play Anzac Day, won't be Melbourne as its our turn to host Kings Birthday and it should be our home game, won't be Brisbane as we'll play them at the Gabba on Easter Thursday.

AFL will want a blockbuster so I'd say it will be against Geelong, Sydney or GWS on the Friday night

This is so goddamn hilarious.

Whinges you've been away last 2 years.

Let's check:

2023 you were certainly away at....the MCG. Your home ground. Against a side that is forced to give up their proper home ground.

2022 you were certainly away at....Marvel Stadium. That 12 minute tram ride must've been tough on the boys.

AND THEN lists a whole heap of marquee fixtures the Pies get year after year.

Yet without fail every year Collingwood whinge about the fixture. Unbelievable.

Pies v Cats works for me.

I’d be ok with something like this

Thurs: 7.40 Carlton v Richmond
Fri: 7.40 Collingwood v Geelong
Sat:
1.10 Essendon v West Coast
4.40 Adelaide v GWS
7.20 Brisbane v Melbourne
7.20 Hawthorn v Port Adelaide

Sun:
1.10 Western Bulldogs v Gold Coast
3.20 Sydney v St Kilda
4.40 Fremantle v North Melbourne

Most non Vic sides getting a reversal of round 1 H/A in 2023 bar West Coast. They should have a home game but not sure the AFL would want such a lack of Vic games round 1.

Thursday Night - Carlton vs. Geelong (something different) - MCG
Friday Night - Collingwood vs. Brisbane - MCG
Saturday Early - Sydney vs. Adelaide - SCG
Saturday Twilight - Western Bulldogs vs. St Kilda - Marvel
Saturday Night - Port Adelaide vs. Gold Coast - Adelaide Oval
Saturday Night - Melbourne vs. Richmond - MCG
Sunday Early - North Melbourne vs. Hawthorn - Marvel
Sunday Afternoon - Essendon vs. Fremantle - MCG
Sunday Twilight - GWS vs. West Coast - Giants Stadium

Good rant buddy

Here to have a genuine conversation, but seems you've got a real chip on your shoulder about being an irrelevant club, oh well

This looks about right, blockbusters Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Maybe switch St Kilda and Bulldogs and it's just about bang on

Collingwood won’t play brisbane until Easter Thursday in Brisbane as they’ve done each year for the last 10.
Richmond will play Carlton as we also do each year.
We wouldn’t play Melbourne anyway as we play them Anzac eve each year.

Pies v cats will get a huge crowd anyway regardless if they are raising the flag or not.
You’d be better to play pies v giants first up, you’d get at least 80,000 there for a game that wouldn’t usually draw that much plus it’s a replay of the prelim.
