If your AFL club was a Cricket nation

Saw a similar thread in the wrestling board a while back, thought it would be cool.

India: Collingwood. Loved by Indian fans, not so much by anyone else.
South Africa: Hawthorn. Full of strong recent success.

Any other ideas?

Richmond - India. Huge potential, over-excited fans, regularly slaughter the minnows, everyone from the board to the players to the press think they're clearly challenging for Number 1...............................

And then it all falls apart in some embarrassing, feeble manner.

But that's OK - because 6 months later - we're back! And this time, we're definitely going to win the lot!

Geelong - Australia. Coming off a very successful period and, having lost the majority of the stars of that era, are starting to wane a little. Some talented young players coming through and showing promise, but rely a little too much on their captain, resulting in a team that can be quite inconsistent - much to the chagrin of a lot of their supporters, who have become used to success. Very good record at home still, but disappointing on the road.

North Melbourne - Australia

Dominant in the '70s and '90s, hot and cold at the moment.

Carlton - West Indies

Dominant side for a long time up until the mid '90s, haven't done anything right this century. Undisciplined playing group, disenchanted former greats, dysfunctional administration.

!

Yes because Richmond are the reigning champions?

Good. Very good. We will always be around the mark to winning any major comp.

England - Melbourne.

One of the oldest clubs going around, rich in history and tradition that have done nothing for a long long time.

Fremantle - Sri Lanka. They have the ability to piss you off and win at the same time.

Of recent times I'd say NZ. Can compete with the bigger nations and snag a win from time to time, but usually let ourselves down on the home stretch.

Australia is More Geelong. Last time I checked Australia was pretty handy for the first 5 years of the 2000s. Had a handy tour of England in 48 as well iirc

St kilda- Kenya. Long time battlers who have both tasted one off success. Both have produced their share of stars that have been forced to carry the team through dire periods but these guys are now at the end. Both sides needing to turn to youth in order to stay relevant.

Unlike the Saffers, we don't choke when it matters;)

Fremantle - Zimbabwe

Been around the scene for quite a while now without ever really doing anything spectacular, and nobody seriously expects that to change any time soon.

Brisbane - Australia World Cup Squads; won three in a row and then everybody retired. Shithouse since.

Here’s my take on a few clubs and countries.

Agree with England-Melbourne and India-Collingwood.

West Indies and Richmond: Dominant in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. Haven’t done much since then. The sport is a little more effervescent when these guys are doing well.

Sri Lanka and North Melbourne: Small, underdog types. Climaxed in the ‘90s.

Australia: Geelong or Hawthorn. Geelong because they’ve been there from day one, basically. Hawthorn for their periods of concentrated success.

Pakistan: Carlton or Essendon. Large supporter base (but not the biggest). Off-field troubles in recent years. Quality during the ‘80s, ‘90s, early 2000s but struggled since.

New Zealand: St Kilda or Western Bulldogs. Battlers that have had good teams pop up over the years, but never really been the leader of the pack.

South Africa: Not sure. Maybe Port Adelaide.

lol Collingwood, very arrogant, think the world revolves around them

Essendon- Pakistan. Inconsistent for a while and have gone through a controversy recently that makes everyone hate them
possibly have players suspended as well:(

Gold Coast- Nepal or Afghanistan. Exciting young minnow team that looks likely to put together some success in the medium-long term

What? There's a wrestling board! What the hell am I doing here?

Western Bulldogs - New Zealand, little money but not the worst off, capable of beating sides unexpectedly, hard-working with few stars who over the journey have had a few good periods without much in terms of ultimate success.

GWS - Afghanistan, maybe one day they will be something

Sydney - India, the rules are bent to favour them
Collingwood - the other India

Gold Coast - Ireland, just turning up is no longer enough

Melbourne - Zimbabwe, s**t for a long time, if the administration ever gets itself together may one day be competitive again

Tasmania - Papua New Guinea, play the game but despite everyone's sympathies will never be in the big league

West Indies = Richmond is the obvious one. Both successful for decades on end, but a series of administration blunders and financial problems put paid to their glory days.

South Africa = Collingwood, both have a habit of choking in the big ones.

Sri Lanka = North Melbourne, successful in the 90s, perpetually mid-table, have produced some notable players in the past two decades (Carey/Murali, Harvey/Sangakkara, etc.)

Pakistan = Essendon, scandals and cheating galore.

India = Sydney, rules are skewed in their favour, previously likeable but not anymore, successful, arguably the glamour sides of their respective competitions.

England = Carlton, big and powerful, rich history, lack of recent success.

Australia = Geelong, successful of late, have fallen somewhat after losing ageing champions, youthful but fairly reliant on their respective captains.

New Zealand = Western Bulldogs, young team, battlers, lack the size, relevance and clout of other sides

Zimbabwe = Melbourne, basket case for many years but could improve with a more competent administration.

Ireland/Afghanistan = GC/GWS, may be test cricket's next venture, rising fast and garnering attention
