South African Draft prospect Ziggy Alwan

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-20/ziggie-alwan
The South African-born forward joined Frankston in the VFL this season and enjoyed a sensational start to the year, named in the best players in seven of the first 10 games. His second half of the year was quieter but Alwan still finished with 20 goals from 17 appearances playing anywhere from full-forward to centre half-back. Has great hands, a big leap and naturally chases the football in second and third efforts.

World Footy News reports on the Rookie Draft

With todays’ AFL rookie draft the international focus of AFL clubs continues to expand.
The formalisation of American recruits Jason Holmes (StKilda) and Patrick Mitchell (Sydney) along with Irish pair Ciaran Sheehan and Ciaran Byrne (both to Carlton) are the more traditional speculative ‘code conversion’ pathways for international recruiting typified in the past by names such as Stynes, Wight, Kennelly, Pyke, Tuohy, and Wallace..
Of more interest to Australian Football pathways overseas are the pair of Kiwis in Kurt Heatherley and Shem Tatupu. Both from New Zealand and both have been developing as juniors and have participated in the junior pathways for both New Zealand and regionally for the South Pacific squad.

World Footy News on new clubs in Europe - http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php/20131122214028156

A quick look at the list of clubs receiving start up grants from AFL Europe is a reasonable indicator of the slow but steady growth of Australian Rules football across the continent. Some might argue that the true growth is only seen in the number of players listed with clubs. Others might argue that not all of these clubs will see the distance. But one thing that is true is that the line-up of people seeking grants on behalf of fledgling clubs continues.

Proposed match between All AFL Asia and Royal Australian Navy receives massive boost

AFL Asia and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) have been in ongoing discussions regarding a combined Royal Australian Navy team taking on a combined AFL Asia team – a team of AFL Asia’s best – somewhere in Asia.

Retour sur… Bordeaux vs Paris

Chapeau. »

Google Translate:
UNSLL-CNFA: How was the game?
Alexander Vautrin "Unlike usual, we are immediately returned to the game. We knew that we should not leave Paris to play their game and we made the effort early on. It worked for the first ten minutes of the game and then we gradually release the pressure on their opponents. The match was punctuated by ups and downs in the technical difficulty to put our game up with a fat land plowed by previous rugby. The game was particularly intense physically and morally, with lots of ground game and groupings which was tough for organizations. Luckily we were fifteen. Parisian eleven just have not fallen physically. Hat. "

Youth AFL Oceania Cup returns to Fiji

This week the 5th AFL Youth Oceania Cup will take place. Previous winners since the inaugural event in 2009 have been Tonga, PNG, New Zealand and last year Fiji. The pathway has changed somewhat with last years the first tournament without either of New Zealand or PNG involved in this phase. New year the Oceania side will again take on PNG and NZ in the South Pacific Cup.

Below is a media release from the AFL

Fiji will host the 2013 Youth AFL Oceania Cup from December 10 to 14.

Five nations will compete in the carnival that will be played at Albert Park in Suva; Fiji, Nauru, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
AFL Asia-Pacific Development Manager Andrew Cadzow is looking forward to a week of competition.

“The Oceania Cup will play a vital role in showcasing the many talented players in our great game and more importantly, highlight the development and growth of football throughout Asia-Pacific.

“Following the carnival an Oceania team will be selected to play for South Pacific Cup against New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and an Australian Indigenous team at Coffs Harbour in Australia in April 2014,” he said.

The New Zealand Hawks will take on a squad from the AFL AIS Academy in Wellington at Westpac Stadium on January 25th with a very strong squad that is believed to be every chance of beating the Australians after the 2013 game ended with a 43 point loss to the New Zealand side.

The New Zealand squad will feature eleven players from the Auckland provincial championship side and much of the rest of the squad will come from Australia, with a mix of youth and experience.

The squad includes two AFL international scholarship holders, Siope Ngata (Hawthorn) and Joe Baker-Thomas (St Kilda). Khan Haretuku (Frankston, VFL) will also line up for the Hawks, as will four members of the Northern Territory Thunder including the Thunder captain, Cameron Illet, and Lachlan Argus, Matthew Argus and Brendon Clark. Andrew Howison (Collegians, VAFA) and Andy Christenson round out the Australian based contingent.

With a strong squad, sprinkled with experience, the New Zealand side are more confident than ever that the gap between the A is getting smaller and smaller.
----------------------------

The New Zealand National Combine will be held on January 23rd at the ASB Indoor Stadium in Wellington. Participants in the combine will come from the elite of the New Zealand high performance program.

----------------------------

The SANH (AFL Croatia) is conducting a fundraiser via Sportfunder to construct their own Australian football facility in Zagreb. Currently they train on a dirt field, but have recently been offered the opportunity to properly construct an australian football field, however they lack the ability to fund it themselves. For more information please visit: http://www.sanh.hr

NZ Hawks go down to AFL AIS by 4 points. 5 6 36 to 4 16 40.

Pretty ordinary kicking by the AIS, but the facts remain, NZ led with a couple of minutes to go. I am looking forward to match reports on how the NZ AFL rookies that played went.
