Some notes from Soldo's first game.....
Ivan Maric’s cousin, Richmond rookie Ivan Soldo, makes football debut for Northern Knights in TAC Cup
HE IS the cousin of Richmond’s mullet-wielding cult figure, Ivan Maric.
And after playing his first ever game of football on Saturday, those with an eye for young talent agree Ivan Soldo is also capable of carving out an AFL career just like his namesake.
Signed by Richmond as a rookie last week, the 18-year-old trained with the Northern Knights before pulling on his boots for the side’s TAC Cup clash with Gippsland Power in Morwell on Saturday.
The 204cm, 106kg former state basketballer played only the first half of the match, but did not look too out of place as he collected one kick, two handballs, one mark and numerous hit-outs.
“He took a little while to get going, but once he did, he really started to get involved in the ruck contests,” Northern Knights coach Andrew Shakepeare said.
“He got some really good hits to advantage and started to find the drop of the ball getting into a few marking contests.
“So, it was a reasonable hit-out for his first game.
“His size is fantastic for AFL football, but also his competitive nature.
“He’s a pretty ferocious customer and we really enjoyed having that, because that’s an area we can improve in, just our attack on the ball.”
