Lappin is out of form!

Not that I want to single a player out - especially not to apportion the blame of a loss (and I don't normally contribute a critical topic about one individual player), but so far this season, N.Lappin has been pretty much out of form.

The last two weeks, I've seen him turn the ball over, and take on opponents and get tackled. It's not his usual self. Perhaps he is injured?? He seems to be lacking in confidence - or perhaps lacking confidence in his team-mates, and trying to do things that he shouldn't.

The game against Richmond was a clear display of how N.Lappin is out of form. In the third quarter he missed a run-in shot from about 40m out. Now, I'm not getting down on him for missing one shot (anyone could), but considering he is one of our top players, and it came at a time when Richmond were beginning to get on a role (that sunk us, in the end), it was a pretty disappointing result. A goal at that stage could have stopped the Tigers from getting that run-on.

Similarly, in the last quarter, Lappin had the ball between wing and half forward. Initially, he was clear, and could have kicked long to an option, or run down the flank (albeit, into the pocket). However, he attempted to run 'inside', through the centre. This was actually a diversion from where he was initially running to - and he ran straight into two Richmond defenders, and after trying still to take them on, he handballed it in front of him straight to a Richmond player, who cleared, and sent the ball into attack for a Richmond goal.

(I will mention though, Lappin himself looked extremely disappointed with the result on both occasions - the guy definitely cares for his performance, which is more than you could apparently saw for some - but he just isn't playing well at the moment).

Now, I'll admit, it is being pretty critical to pull those two incidents out and analyse them in this way. But, they both came at times when the game was in the balance, and considering Lappin's ability, it was disappointing to see the result.

I am not having a go at Lappin (I love the guy!), but rather commenting on his performances to date, for this season.

All things considered, N.Lappin pulls his weight in other areas, however, even his overall game has been down - well, at least on his best (what we know he is capable of).

I certainly don't expect players to play at their best 'every' week. They are human after all. However, at the moment, N.Lappin seems to be out of form, and having very little effect on the outcome of the game.

I hope he can get back into form, and get some confidence going. He is certainly the difference, when he is at his best.

Olmy,
Your assessment of Nigel is pretty accurate, it seems like a lot of the Lions are taking the wrong options & not playing percentage football. I noticed that in the game against the doggies we appeared to be at least 2 metres behind our opponents, giving them free reign to play their style of game. It seemed as the game went on the confidence level dropped even further. Injuries do play a part in team performance, however, there are always exceptions (Carlton beating Essendon) & I understand we will lose games, but it's the manner of how we are losing games that disappoints. There is no excuse for not giving 100%. Most supporters can live with defeat if their team fight it out to the right up until the final siren.

Quite right Olmy....and hes not the only one. Players we rely on week in week out to provide quality possession to the young blokes are not up to scratch so far this season.

I reiterate my support for Daniel Bradshaw here. As I have said and repeated ad nausium, the delivery boys continue to put the lollie at his feet, just out of reach to the left or right or so far above his head it gives a defender an easy ride. No wonder he is despondent.

With all the running in circles through the mid-field this year, it is sending all the wrong messages to the young players and their indecisiveness is rubbing off.

We've got to get back to straight running and kicking directly to positions on the forward line and give these young blokes a go.

I'm so PROUD of PICKO!!!!!!
I don't think Olmy or myself are picking on Nigel, just assessing the current form of one of the best running players in the game, and yes I wish I could have been half as good when I was his age. There is no doubting his talent, just find it difficult to understand the form slump of not only him, but some of his team mates. Is there unhappiness in the camp?? The comments about "Traitors" attributed to Leigh Matthews if accurate do nothing for stability in the side. As far as Brett Voss is concerned, I don't think he had a choice but to try elsewhere because he was not a regular in the side. I don't know whether he was being compared with his brother, for mine though, he never gave up the fight, whether it be in the reserves or the seniors, he was one of my favorites, & I wish him well with the Saints. He may not have the natural ability of his brother, but he reminds me of John Blakey of the Roos, consistent, read the play well & never lacks intestinal fortitude. Looks like a got off the original subject, (it happens when one gets old).
YAY!!

The only way is up for Tom, oops I mean Nige.

And as for Marcus William Picko Picken, I thought he was great last week.

Keep up the good work Picko son.
I'm proud of ya too.

cheers...

I would have to agree with this philosophy but there has to be a cause why the big gun players arent peforming to their full potential. The only party i can think of to blame is the coaching staff. This includes the fitness coaches, the skills coaches etc. If this is analysed maybe the lions will have a better chance winning more games, especially in melbourne

Hardly "picking" on him, keatings_gal. Just giving a few comments on how he's going.

I think he would probably even agree with a lot of what I've said. If you don't, that's fine - although, you didn't really canvas many points of contention.

Most people who've read what I write over time, will know that I am a big fan of Nigel.

Steve,

After observing Bradshaw very closely live, he does what many junior footballers do when they have not succeeded - he drops his head. The opposition know it and just give him heaps. He gets severely verballed and sort of shrinks. I see a guy on the outer.

Last year we had 3 players with over 50 goals - a huge effort. This year those three players are missing. Who will step up ? Don't you just miss Jarrod !!!

not at all.....he was just as unreliable

Only because he was stuffed around . . .

If the club had been prepared to work with Molloy, he would be giving us better results than Lynch and Bradshaw have this season (combined!).

Molloy genuinely cared about his on-field output. He cared about the club, and he cared about the results. Sure, he cracked that shites when things when wrong (and perhaps he didn't always have the best attitude), but I think he often lacked the support he deserved.

Lynch hasn't had enough time to settle into one spot - he's been used all over the joint so far this year, and I think this is keeping him out of top form. If given a decent run at FF like last season, he could get his rythym going again. Unfortunately, Keating and Leppitsch's absence means that Lynch has to be used elswhere. But what can you do??

Hopefully the senior players can do something here after some very bad outings & both make a committment to leading the team by example & also encouraging the younger players.

I would like to think there is some team spirit here to do this but would not be too sure.

OldLion,

I would give my left 'testimonial' to have Jarrod back with us. We (and I) really miss his straight running and strength on the forward line.

And I would bet London to a brick every Brisbane forward is missing the wide open tracks he made for them.

Olmy has written plenty on the subject and I must say I echo his sentiments.

C'mon keatings_gal, are you Lappin's media protector or something? Appointed by whom, I wonder??

If any player is injured, he shouldn't be playing. Once you're out on the park, there's no excuses - otherwise don't go out there in the first place (whether that is down to him, or the coaching/med staff we can only guess).

In any regard, we're hardly "ruthlessly bagging" Lappin here, are we? As far as I can see, we've all been reasonable, and constructive in our criticisms. We're having a discussion about his on-field performances. After all this is a site to do such things.

I don't see why you're taking such objection to us discussing Lappin's performances. We're hardly "bagging" him - just saying he's down on his best. We realise he is a better player than what he has shown to date this season, and are hoping that he'll get back to his form of season 2000.

I'm sure Lappin himself would agree with a number of the points made in this topic.
