Really cool article over on fivethirtyeight.com about one man's decades-long love affair with NBA box scores:

Meet the Man Who Preserved Decades of NBA History

Dick Pfander has spent most of his life collecting and analyzing box scores from every NBA game since the league’s founding. He did most of his work in solitude, by hand, before the age of personal computers. And he did it simply for his own pleasure, surrounded by supportive family members who cared neither about basketball nor statistics, let alone their intersection.

Today, his analog hobby is paying digital dividends for stats-obsessed basketball fans. His work has helped fill gaps in the league’s statistical record for both its official website and the leading independent reference site. The project continues — but without Pfander.

Rafael Nadal at the French Open
- has only lost 20 sets in 66 matches (5 TBs, one 5-7)
- only loss was in 4 sets to Robin Soderling at the '09 FO
- Soderling remains the only player to take 2 non-tiebreak sets off him
- has been 2 sets to 1 down just twice (the '09 loss to Soderling and R1 '11 to Isner)
- has won 9 FOs, yet only one as the #2 seed

I recently recalled that Mike Hussey once had a Test average of 86.33 early in his career. I was then intrigued to discover how many other batsmen had averaged higher than that at any point of their career. I have included all players I could find who averaged over 70 with a total of 1000 runs or more (plus a few who just missed out).

Did Neil Harvey peak too quickly or something?

Fair drop.

Last-placed Cronulla Sharks in the NRL have had an interesting few weeks.

In Round 10, they led Wests Tigers 20-14 before conceding the last 8 points of the game and losing.

NB: Rounds 12 and 14 were byes.
In Round 11, they lost 0-18 to Souths.
In Round 13, they lost 30-0 to the Dragons.
In Round 15, they lost 0-26 to the Sea Eagles.
In Round 16, they were 22-0 down to the Broncos.

They went 321 minutes conceding 104 points without scoring. Bottom of the ladder, ASADA and Todd Carney issues, coach stood down, not a happy place to be. Yet after all that, in the last 27 minutes against Brisbane, they turned the game around and won 22-24, winning from the biggest deficit in the club's history.

Having seemingly turned a corner, a week later against the Roosters, Cronulla find themselves down 0-24. That's 5 weeks in a row they have on average conceded the first 20 points of the game. Yet like the previous week, also away, Cronulla managed to get their act together and come from behind, winning 28-30, eclipsing last week's feat of winning from a club record deficit.

Interesting fact: In the English Summer of 2014 James Anderson has scored more runs than both Alistair Cook and Ben Stokes in the same or lesser number of innings. English cricket is very worrisome

In his final test, Mahela Jayawardene scores his 34th test century against South Africa and 11th at his home ground Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC).

He is the only player to score 10 or more centuries at any particular venue.

68 players have played 300 AFL games, 13 have played 350 games.

In NRL, only 2 have played 350, not sure how many have played 300 (14 have played 313 or more).

Anthony Minichiello (Sydney Roosters) will be retiring this year and will go into the finals on 299 games at the same club. The club record is Luke Ricketson's 301. There's a good chance 'Mini' will play game 302 in the preliminary final.

He could have challenged Darren Lockyer's NRL record of 355 if not for injuries in 2006-2009.

Minichiello will indeed play game 302 this coming weekend, breaking the Sydney Roosters club record.

EDIT: lol, only found this after I had constructed the table below

In the NFL on Monday morning, the New England Patriots defeated Oakland 16-9. Every single point was scored by someone whose surname ended in 'kowski':

Rod Gronkowski caught the only touchdown of the game while Stephen Gostkowski kicked 3 field goals.

For Oakland, Sebastian Janikowski kicked 3 field goals.

If they went out on the town afterwards, they'd get Poleaxed. (Polaksed.)

Steve Menzies actually played 477 games as he played in the ESL as well.

If you also included rep games there'd be many more over 300 and some over 400.

EG: Lockyer would be on 458 and Menzies would be on 520.

Canterbury could become the first premier to lose 11 matches in the H&A season, and some of them were quite substantial. They barely struggled to a positive for-and-against, in fact scored fewer tries than they conceded. May as well pick the grand finalists out of a hat, rather than mucking about with ladders and competition points.
