Most consecutive finals appearances?

Are they? Is that the same for the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Lions?

Nope, that was new entity formed out of the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions. Fitzroy had their chance to keep their history and tradition undiluted, but chose to fight on instead.

So why are the SMFC and the SFC the same?

I was googling most consecutive finals appearances because we've heard a lot this week about Richmond potentially making back-to-back finals series for the first time since the 70s. Anyway, this thread popped up.

First thing is how surprising that no-one called the OP when the Hawks missed the finals in 2009.

Next, based on DarwinRoo 's post...

Geelong equal their record this year.
Sydney equal their record this year and will need another showing next year to equal the South Melbourne record.
St Kilda equalled their record 2008 to 2011.

We can't be equaling our record this year. We made the finals from 2003 - 2008 inclusive, so six years. We then missed 2009, and made 2010 and every year since, so the current streak including this year is 5.

Think Bruce was reading BigFooty while calling the play. Mentioned the Hawks 13 year streak a few times, and that the Cats are at 8 consecutive years towards the end of the telecast.

I believe Hawthorn finished in the top 8 for 26 years straight years from 1968 to 1994 inclusively.

Does anyone know what the current record streak is for consecutive finals appearances is?

Looking at the Hawthorn list, coach, and recruiting department, combined with the number of father son draft picks coming up over the next 15 years, the Hawks look set for a long time. If they can keep Clarkson as coach I would reckon they won't miss a finals berth until 2021 or depending on injuries 2022. Will that be a record?
Well at least this is a fresh change on the trite "we are taking it one week at a time"
