The year is 1860 and while it's not even been a century since Captain Cook came across this great land, immigrants are flooding to this new found land to start a new life. The attraction of gold has brought most of them over, including a lot of Americans of which have brought the interesting concept of baseball with them. While the locals were confused at first as to how to play, after some encouragement, the sport has spread like rapid fire across the colonies and across the Bass Straight. As many as 28 local clubs have been starting to set up amongst the colonies and everyone is willing to give it a go.
There has been a meeting between all the colonies that have agreed to start a new sports movement, something that can inspire competition and unity while keeping people fit on their days off. It has been decided that there will be seven small divisions as to avoid immense travel in which they are:
New South Wales (Coast Division and Inland Division)
Victoria (Metro Division and Country Division)
Queensland
Tasmania
South Western Australia
From these seven divisions, the top teams will move through to the playoffs at the end of the season along with a wildcard (the highest ranked team across the divisions that didn't finish on top). It will be a best-of-five playoff series until the final which will be a best-of-seven. The league which will be known as the Colonial Baseball League has been established to start.

1860 Baseball News Predictions

The inaugural Colonial Baseball League season is about to get underway with 28 teams battling it out across the colonies to try and become the very best side for the 1860 season. In New South Wales, Newcastle and Dubbo are expected to be the cream of the crop with Albury a chance to also snatch the inland division. Victoria is expected to host the closest division with just seven wins expected between 1st and 4th in the country division while Melbourne and Fitzroy are both expected to challenge for the metro division. In Queesland, Hervey Bay are the favourites ahead of Toowoomba while while in Tasmania both Burnie and Launceston are expected to achieve over 90 wins. In the south west, Perth and Bunbury are the sides that are favourites to make the playoffs.

1860 Regular Baseball Season Results

New South Wales (Coast)

1. Wollongong Wrath (82-80)
2. Sydney Witches (66-96)
3. Newcastle Miracles (65-97)
4. Port Macquarie Fisherman (51-111)

Wollongong Wrath secured the New South Wales (Coast) division easily with the other three sides finishing bottom three overall with 0.407 and as low as .315 winning percentage. Sydney (26th overall), Newcastle (27th overall) and Port Macquarie (28th overall) were all disappointing.

New South Wales (Inland)

1. Albury Bulldogs (91-71)
2. Bathurst Starfish (84-78)
3. Orange Timberjacks (79-83)
4. Dubbo Poachers (78-84)

As predicted pre-season, Albury takes out the New South Wales (Inland) division with Bathurst scoring a respective .519 winning percentage. Bathurst (13th overall), Orange (17th overall) and Dubbo (20th overall) were the others.

Victoria (Metro)

1. Fitzroy Lions (83-79)
2. St Kilda Saints (82-80)
3. Williamstown Seagulls (78-84)
4. Melbourne Demons (72-90)

In an incredibly close division, Fitzroy won with just 83 wins. To put that in perspective, five teams missed out on the playoffs with a higher win percentage so they were incredibly lucky to sneak in. St Kilda (14th overall), Williamstown (19th overall) and Melbourne (23rd overall) were the other results.

Victoria (Country)

1. Bendigo Officers (89-73)
2. Geelong Cats (85-77)
3. Shepparton Colossals (77-85)
4. Ballarat Miners (70-92)

Bendigo emerged victorious from the country division in Victoria, just ahead of Geelong. Geelong (12th overall), Shepparton (21st overall) and Ballarat (25th overall) were the others. The latter was the worst performing side outside of the NSW coast.

Queensland

1. Toowoomba Tormenters (99-63)
2. Mackay Ransackers (92-70)
3. Hervey Bay Toucans (92-70)
4. Brisbane Buffalos (79-83)

Toowoomba well and truly earned its spot in the playoffs with a 99 win season and an impressive 0.611 winning percentage to finish top overall. Queensland seemed to be the unlucky group with Mackay and Hervey Bay both recording 92 wins but missing out on a wild card by a solitary win. Hervey Bay lost its last two wins which was shattering. Both finished 2nd and 3rd in the wild card challenge. Brisbane finished 18th overall.

Tasmania

1. Launceston Red Sox (96-66)
2. Burnie Stingrays (93-69)
3. Hobart White Sox (80-82)
4. Ulverstone Eskimos (75-87)

Launceston and Burnie both advanced to the playoffs with Burnie earning the coveted wildcard. There was a clear gap between the top two and bottom two as Hobart finished 16th overall while Ulverstone finished 22nd.

South Western Colonies

1. Adelaide Bengals (90-72)
2. Bunbury Broncos (89-73)
3. Mount Gambier Dingos (81-81)
4. Perth Villains (70-92)

Adelaide managed to secure the early bragging rights with a one win title over Bunbury. Bunbury finished 4th in the playoff race while Mount Gambier (15th overall) was ok but Perth was disappointing in 24th.
