NEAFL - Northern Conference - Season 2012

LAB - we have disagreed on a few things here re the structure / selection
I reckon work ethic and personality should be near the top of the tree for recruiting a bloke, talent a close 2nd and then physical attributes next. The last 2 you can change, the first one I don't believe you really can (generally).

SMY your starting to scare me,we are agreeing too often, this is exactly why I believe the talent pathway needed a shakeup. They start and finish with physical attributes ignoring the others and the fact that growth like maturity happens at different rates and the game adapts and changes as well.In the NFL it has been discovered that running backs agility and sideways movement is more important than size and now they are drafting players as short as 168cm for this position.Watch how this will be the next miracle discovery in AFL .

Not disagreeing at all - just think that in Qld its not a bad starting point for potential draftees bc so many high quality athletes DON'T play AFL - is practically unheard of in the "football states". #1 should always be attitude and character (coachability) although our media might not be so happy if they didn't have the odd numbskull to write about!

Not sure our game has much correlation with NFL so pretty sure we won't be heading towards vertically challenged blokes (good big man will always beat a good little man :D) but certainly think blokes who are not speed machines will start coming to the fore a bit more if they win plenty of the footy in close. This to me is the biggest change in our game at the top level - no room for receivers I reckon.

This year's competition will be much more even than a lot of people think.

There are some serious sponsorship concerns for football in the NT, so costs will be an issue.

Some of the NTFL clubs can smell blood and may become for some an equally attractive financial prospect for some players. Hence the pitched battle that started this week.

The rumour mill still has the NT picking up a few players (Motlop, Wonameiri, Lawler etc) and they were quite a bit ahead of everyone this year so they are still the team to beat.

Throw a blanket over everybody else though. Most sides apear to have kept their lists reasonably intact (every team loses a couple every year) and I sure there is a lot more recruiting going on than we know about. I am pretty certain the comp will go up another notch next year.

They usually release the draw before xmas so expect that to come out in the next 2 weeks or so. Interesting to see each clubs travel commitments and games against the Lions and Suns etc.

Watching a bit of the test match today made me think "looking forward to footy!!" Don't mind the cricket but nothing like the footy weekend to look forward to at the end of the working week....

riodj,

Beg to differ on your point of no senior exposure - apart from Victoria with the TAC Cup comp most 17-18 year olds (with the bigger bodies and the ability), once their state duties are completed go directly into either seniors or reserves in their top comps within their state of origin - that is when the recruiters see if they can mix it with the elite - Qld and Tas are not the only Comp sides who list the players at club level who are also playing in their state sides and when their state duties are completed they to go back to playing senior footy, all other states apart from Victoria have this policy - yet most draftees come from the TAC Cup Comp surley this must say something. Politics plays a very big part in who gets drafted, remember the AFL has only one letter in difference to the VFL. - As a member of an AFL footy club, I would rather see if a draftee can play at a senior football level first as the difference playing junior football to senior football is a massave jump and a bit of a head spin for kids who have not tried it at least for the 1st few games.

Paul Roo's idea to move the draft age to 21 makes a lot of sense to me - young blokes have got a grip on life by that age especially with a work ethic apart from football, a feel of a relationship with the opposite sex and a bit more stable maturity in where their life is headed and also by then a lot of senior footy exposure.

Just 2 out of 14 WA players drafted played senior football this year. This is not unusual for all states. QLD kids are in general - a mile off the standard of Southern state leagues let alone AFL.
The pathways are alot clearer and the standard of competition prior to them playing in Academies etc is far superior.

Which state league on the Gold Coast would have the best set up to develop young players?

Based on what

You guys are right about lifting the drafting age there is plenty of evidence right across the world including the NFL to confirm this is correct.

The only two players I can think of that have immediate impact straight away in their first year are Judd and Joel Selwood. ( neither number 1 pick incidentally so recruiters are more wrong than they are right).

But the AFL think they are in a battle for the young athletes of Australia so it will not happen, they want to commit them to our game at a young age and that is their priority.

Exactly. Everyone can see the benefits of lifting the drafting age, but the downside is losing young athletes to other codes. Going straight from school to earning 60-80K is a pretty enticing deal.

No brainer NEAFL northern division. Based on:
1) best standard of football
2) most professional set up
3) learning off better coaches and having ex afl players around them
4) the experience of learning the difficulties of travelling (flying) to play
football
5) professional medical (physio and trainers) to tend to and manage injuries
6) more exposure to recruiters
7) more likely to be played in their most suitable position
8) less drinking/drug culture at top level clubs
9) better facilities

The list goes on.....

Should be another cracker year of NEAFL. NT might subside slightly. Southport, Labrador will improve if they have less injuries. Aspley recruited a few. Broady have to replace a few top liners but seem to be heading in the right direction. Mounties and Siders might slide without their well respected coaches in place. Redlands abit of an unknown at this stage. Any different thoughts?

Predictions for 2012

1. Mt Gravatt - Still a very strong lineup - good depth from ressies also
2. Southport - Big improvers of this season, will bounce back from last year
3. NT Thunder - Always tough to beat at home, will be around the mark
4. Aspley - Signing of Payne is a plus, experience from last year will help
5. Morningside - may slide a little, but always find a way to get up there.

6. Gold Coast - Just miss the finals, will be very inconsistent due to plenty of changes
7. Broadbeach - I think the loss of Zorko will hurt big time.
8. Redlands - Still unsure what to expect. could improve big time or may still be very similar to last year
9. Labrador - don't see them being a threat this season
10. Brisbane Lions - hard to be a threat with there constant changes to line up

Seems very similar to last years table. With Siders and Thunder sliding a little. Expect a more even competition this year.

Best and Fairest - Payne
Leading Goalkicker - ?
Young Players to watch out for - Jordon Bourke / Adam Oxley

Teale,Falconer gone from Aspley as well.Eagle still at cattery.Any reason Aspleys recruits don't stay any longer than 2 years. They are obviously well paid, club lines jobs and accomodation up for them as per most clubs.Shir going to Grange by all reports, something not right within the club
