Play on from out of bounds - Chris Mayne goal?

Just watching the Dockers/Brisbane game and Mayne took in the pocket on the boundary line. Rather than the drop punt, he shapes up for a right-footed snap in his run up. Mayne came off his line, was still outside the boundary line, the umpire calls play-on, but Mayne is still allowed to kick the ball from outside the boundary line and gets a goal.

Thought the rule was that if you played on from outside the boundary line that play stops and the boundary umpire then throws the ball back into play.

Provided he doesn't change his line again after playon is called it's all good

Mayne was still on line. It was called play on because he had the ball too long. The only way it would've been called out of bounds would be if the Brissy player tackled him or Mayne dropped the ball.

Umpire called play on before Mayne had a chance to fall to the ground clutching his ankle, knee, shoulder or head.
