Was listening to SEN last night and Robbo informed the listeners that Hird had helped Reid write the famous letter (below, as taken from the charge sheet). I've watched/listened/read this all reasonably closely and this was news to me. Robbo was then questioned by a prickly Dr Turf and he claimed that it was effectively old news as he had reported it a couple of times. Does anyone remember when? where? Dr Turf unfortunately didn't pursue it hard enough......BUT.... I think its a massive point of discussion.....

Why did James Hird help pen a letter to himself?

Apologies, I see this has come up as a topic in other threads....I do reckon its deserving of its own though... its pretty big news I would have thought

55. In the period between 13 January 2012 and 15 January 2012 Reid expressed his concern to Hird and to Hamilton that players had been getting injections of a peptide that he knew nothing about while the players and he had been told that they were getting vitamins and amino acids.
56. As discussed between Hird and Reid at the time that Reid expressed his concern about the players receiving peptide injections, on or about 17 January 2012 Reid wrote a letter addressed to Hird and Hamilton setting out the substance of his concerns. the letter stated as follows:

Dear James/Paul
I have some fundamental problems being club doctor at present.
This particularly applies to the administration of supplements.
Although we have been giving supplements for approximately three months, despite repeated requests as to exactly what we are giving our players and the literature related to this, have at no time been given that until last Sunday [15 January 2012]. Last week the players were given subcutaneous injections, not by myself, and I had no idea that this was happening and also what drug was involved.
It appears to me that in Sydney with Rugby League the clubs do not answer to the governing body (e.g. A.F.L.). It seems that their whole culture is based on trying to beat the system as are close to the edge as one can. It is my belief in A.F.L. that we should be winning flags by keeping a drug free culture.
It is all very well to say this is not banned and that is not banned but for example, the injection that we have given our players subcutaneously, was a drug called AOD/9604, is an Oligomeric Peptide. This drug is derived from the growth hormone. This molecule has been constructed so it has removed what we call IGF1, which is part of the growth hormone that causes muscle and organ growth and bone length and photosynthesis.
It is at the moment used for fat metabolism but also bone strength in children and may have some side effects that may be beneficial in bone growth. This to me just seem ludicrous at this stage where the only trials I have got are on how to lost weight and fat around the abdomen.
If we are resorting to deliver this altered growth hormone molecule, I think we are playing at the edge and this will read extremely badly in the press for our club and for the benefits and also for side effects that are not known in the long term, I have trouble with all these drugs.
I am still not sure whether AOD/9604 is approved by the drug authorities in Australia at this stage. Just because it is not classified as illegal, doesn’t mean that it can be used freely in the community, it cannot. The other interesting thing about AOD/9604, is that its market in America is in body builders. This also should raise a red flag if we are worried about perception.
When it comes to Actovegin, this has been used around the world for many years. There is some flimsy evidence that it may help in speeding up the healing of tendons when they are damaged, though after speaking to radiologists, the recent opinion is that platelets and one’s own blood, probably does a better job.
We are claiming that we should use it as a recovery agent. To me it seems ludicrous that a few mls of calf’s blood spun down, is going to give you a concentration of growth factors and other factors that would speed up recovery.

I am very frustrated by this and now feel I am letting the club down by not automatically approving of these things. I need to collect my thoughts as these drugs have been given without my knowledge.
I am sure Steve Danks believes that what we are doing is totally ethical and legal, however, one wonders whether if you take a long stance and look at this from a distance, whether you would want your children being injected with a derivative hormone that is not free to the community and whether calf’s blood, that has been used for many years and is still doubted by most doctors, is worth pursuing.
Kind Regards

I still don't understand why S0 SCNs were not served on club officials for AOD. This letter is a slam dunk no matter what "advice" was given by ASADA. He pretty much admits it is not fit for therapeutic purposes. Watch this space. The players might get off on AOD ...others might not.

I think the Herald Sun need to start investigating what Robbo is on at present.

I know he is firmly in the Hird corner and probably considers himself a good friend, but to suggest he helped Dr. Ried pen this letter to himself is absurd.

But he said he'd reported/spoken about it a few times already. So I'm tipping its a slip from Robbo. He's a "friend"of Hirds and Hird has divulged this to him. Why?

Certainly possible.

I'd suggest that officials are on a loser trying to claim ignorance on that given that they implemented elaborate measures in the attempt to get around S0 by inserting the compounding pharmacist into the chain.

How that can or does play out would seem to depend on how clearly the command structure of the program can be established.

Makes Hird look like a caring and sharing person?? But why address it to himself? I think Robbo just got befuddled about what Hird asked him to say.

Hasn't James stated that he never saw the letter. Robbo must have got confused. Eventually protect at all costs gets you caught out. Time Robbo started being the Chief football writer of a paper rather than a club / mate apologist. That radio segment was embarrassing.

Wonder if Hird will now sue Robbo. The club might even now ask him to start writing with an ASADA slant as he is so confused it helps if he works for the opposition.

Dear James,

I think you're the best that ever was and ever will be. You're such a great, charismatic man and the perfect leader of the Essendon Football Club, just as you were the perfect player. I still cannot fathom you didn't get three votes in that West Coast game and thus a deserved second Brownlow medal, justifying your Greatest Of All Time position.

These unscrupulous lies and falsities have sought to drag your name through the mud and tarnish the clean image you've always had. I know that you can't wait until you can tell everyone the truth, and that day will come.

In the mean time, go forward knowing that you have the entire footballing public backing you against the evilness of the AFL, ASADA and certain football journalists.

Your greatest fan,

Jim

So the advice the players recieved and the advice the coaches recieved would've been exactly the same coming from Dank but you only think they'll punish one group and not the other? And you're basing that on someone in the coaches group raising concerns but we don't have any evidence like this letter from the players doing the same?

Doesn't make any sense.

Lol Robbo

Please seek help. I think you need to take a leave of absence from work, go on a 6 week holiday overseas (maybe France), stay away from footy and then come back for the finals series where hopefully you can concentrate on the footy.

I can just imagine Tania saying to James, "Darling, I have some friends from Palates coming over for brunch on Sunday morning, a few of them are single. Why don't you ask Robbo to join us..........................Oh Darling, pls tell him that a slab of VB cans isn't appropriate for brunch.".

Of course he helped write it.

He was a central figure in every part of the cover-up - including the Doc Ried "cover your arse" letter.

What Robbo was admitting was the premise we've been told is a lie.

Robbo being the consummate gentleman would say "Gotcha Hirdy sure no VB cans", then rock up with a slab of Crown and give James and Tania a nod to say, he may be a common man of the people who loves a pot in a Fitzroy pub but he also knows how to fit in with the Toorak elite.

James did/didn't write the letter?
James tells Robbo he did write the letter?
James says he has never seen the letter?
Is there more than one James?

Albert, the evil twin separated at birth, kept in Vlad's attic and fed a platter of fish heads once a week.

What ever it is, we can rest assured that it is not performance enhancing.
