A little over a week to go to start what looks like a bumper season. The dees are high up in most media predictions to go all the way after a flag in 21 and looking unbeatable in the first 10 rounds of last season. They lost Jackson and gained Grundy to partner Gawn to form the best tap ruckman combination in the league.

The dogs have lost a B&F winner in Dunkley and were happy for Hunter go. On the surface you would think that would weaken our midfield but to counter that we have a fit Bont and Bailey Smith with the off-field stuff behind him.

Liam Jones looks super fit and is just what the dogs needed add another need in a second ruckman/forward in Lobb, a fit Naughton and JUH ready to play some good consistent footy we look in good shape. Tim English is primed for his best season to date and to complete the land of the giants is Sam Darcy. Every time his name is mentioned it is followed by where will he play forward or back. The answer is both depending on the opposition and against the Dees I suspect back unless Bevo goes with Bruce down back.

So who wins, the dees are clear favourites to win but round 1 who knows. I believe if the Gawn/Grundy ruck combination dominate and give the likes of Petracca and Oliver a armchair ride we will be in trouble. However, I am backing Tim and Rory in to be competitive with our midfield breaking even with the dees. Then our much improved forward line kicking a winning score in a high scoring game.

Quite happy to see Fritsch is no certainty and is under an injury cloud, The major worry here is as always the midfield battle, If we win in the trenches given we now have a vastly superior forward line to theirs and one that can actually now stretch their defence it will come down to how much we can limit their opportunities going forward and if we have learnt to stop teams getting massive run on's against us

They were the form team for half of last year so it's a great test for us.
They defence is excellent and we're trying a 4-tall forwardline (it's mostly 3 at any one time, but whatever).
The last side to go into most H&A games with 4 tall forwards were the Crows when they made the granny.

Dees look pretty settled and ready to fire.
Hunter will provide them with some pretty major scouting reports on us I'd say.
Massive for the Dees will be a fit Tom McDonald who was a key role-player in 2021.
English and Lobb going up against G&G is a massive problem for us. Whilst we did it easy in the praccy game we were still out-tapped by Goldstein and Xerri. Bad signs.

First round games are a battle of attrition with players cramping up etc. Said it all along I can't see us taking young Darcy in along with English and Lobb.

Dees by 27 and an avalanche of melts when Sam doesn't play.

No excuses, Salem out, Viney and Fritsch will be proppy (if they play at all).

All pre season signs are suggesting a dominant start to the season for the Dees.
Strong pre season match performances. A focus on extra cardio sessions etc.

We’re looking pretty switched on too, so I see it being a hard fought close contest and wouldn’t surprise if either team win by a small margin.

Hoping it’s us, but would settle (reluctantly) for a narrow loss. Won’t be able to stomach a similar result to the same match last year. Confident that won’t happen though.

Can’t wait. Carn the Dogs!!

Lobb and Marra both gave Petty a bath in games last year. Will be interesting if that repeats or if Marra or Darcy can take full advantage of getting someone like Trent Rivers if Lever isn’t more accountable.

Using my usual mindset of completely disregarding all media “experts” and pre season form, dogs by 17.

I use the same guesswork most media “experts” do…

Premiership winning lists and contenders generally seem come with a 5 year window of opportunity. (unless you're Luke Beveridge's premiership winning list).

This Dees excitement and exuberance of 2021 is behind them, they now have the sting and reality of not meeting expectations in 2022 as mootivation This year they should be peaking.

Six goals. Dogs.

Should be a great contest. Demons look super fit and hungry and ready to go.

They have a super midfield, as do we.

They have a strong backline, we have a potent forward line.

Question marks on Dees forward power, same applies to our backline.

They have a clear advantage in the ruck, so if English/Lobb have good games, we are a big chance.

  • Western Bulldogs forward Cody Weightman is in serious doubt for next week’s clash against Melbourne after again failing to get through training.
Weightman played just a few minutes of match simulation on Friday morning before coming from the field at Skinner Reserve, having experienced further discomfort following a recent adductor strain.
The 22-year-old had said earlier this week that he felt he was “starting to get on top of” the injury.
However, the training setback came after Weightman had pulled out of the Bulldogs’ pre-season match against North Melbourne last week and now leaves him in a race against time to be ready for round 1.

Weightman has been used through the midfield at times over pre-season as he pushes for more minutes onball this year.
He kicked 36 goals from 21 games last year playing primarily as a forward.
Second-year small forward Arthur Jones suffered an adductor strain of his own during Friday morning’s session, but key defender Alex Keath has been cleared of serious injury after coming from the ground with blood streaming from his left eye.
Keath copped a poke to the eye during a contest, but the Bulldogs confirmed that he had suffered only a small laceration around his eye and was “fine”.

Midfielder Adam Treloar took part in the match simulation but twice had some work done on his hip during it.

Utility Jason Johannisen trained fully after overcoming a recent calf niggle and was lively as a forward at one end of the ground, kicking multiple goals across the two shortened quarters.
Aaron Naughton also starred during the session, kicking two goals in attack in the opening 10 minutes alone.

Western Bulldogs key forward Rory Lobb was on light duties at training on Friday. Picture: Michael Klein

Fellow forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was another to impress, as was captain Marcus Bontempelli through the midfield.
Key forward Rory Lobb and rebounding defender Ed Richards were both on light duties and did not take part in the match simulation but will be ready to go against the Demons next Saturday.

So Arthur Jones has an adductor injury now and Cody couldn't get through training.

That's basically the extent of it

Yep, lots of words to say the same thing you just did... Maybe that's how they get paid, by the word...

I’d rather Cody gets himself right over the next few weeks, however long it takes.

Is it too much to ask that Alex Keath gets through a game without grimacing, hobbling, limping, lying on the ground or sitting on the bench being worked on by the medical staff?

I used to think the same thing about Jordan Roughead.

Demons have a couple of important players in doubt also. Salem won't play and Viney and Fritsch havent trained the last few weeks due to knee and foot injuries respectively, didn't compete in their match sim yesterday so racing against time to be fit.

Both will probably play but might be less than 100%
