Yes hes done ok but hes playing as a 4th bowler.
Bracken,Mcgain hopes etc would all be doing better.
Might go for 1 or more runs an over but no big deal when they get more wickets.

If Macdonald was getting those reults as an allrounder an 5th bowling option it would be a very good bowling performance.
But would still have to show something with the bat.

"Done ok" :p

Your assessments of how well the above bowlers would fair are all hypothetical guesses which you seem to think are facts.

Bracken - I very much doubt it.
McGain, Hopes - no chance

Any 4th bowler and any side would be very happy with his results so far.

I think we can all agree Hughes was definatly the right selection an the selectors got that right.

He has just become the youngest player to ever score back to back centuries.
The first innings was free flowing scoring at close to a run a ball an he brang the 100 up in style with back to back 6's.
2nd innings hes been tied down, yet still managed to hang in there an bring up his 2nd century for the game.

Well I have to admit that McDonald's spell in the first innings here has gone some way (but not all) to winning me over.

But 2/244 here overnight on the 4th day has really shown up our need for a fulltime spinner.

We should still win this match, and I hope (both for HIS sake and ours) that McDonald can contribute toward it.

On a related issue, it's interesting to see Katich finally got a bowl, and before Clarke too. Clarke simply MUST be injured if he's not bowling. But it's good to see Katich get a run - he's a handy bowler and hopefully he can snare 1 or 2.

The fact that Ranga is the fourth bowler in the side (ill agree he has bowled well in this test) must piss some specialist bowlers around the states off... is there ever going to be a need for them???

Aus will finish this off before tea btw :)

For sure!

I hope Marcus North recovers from his gastro to smash em for another tonne.

Hopefully we make it 3 nil:thumbsu:

Me too! :)

Looking forward to it... be interesting to see the final make up of the team, with a few niggles to the bowlers around and this being relatively a dead rubber... Cant imagine any of them putting their hand up to sit out tho (the bowlers) as this is the last chance to impress before the ashes and Lee and Clark waiting in the wings itching to get back

Looks like a typical aussie performance once the series is wrapped up.
They rarely win the next game.
Pitch doesnt look to be doing that much, just seems like there mind isnt 100% on the job and arent as desperate to do well.
Only people that will do well are the ones who dont feel safe about there position in team.

Aus 5/158
North not Playing an now ranga is in and batting.
Great chance for him to finally prove he can bat and secure his place in the side :(
So far from 4 matches he has a fantastic batting avg of 8 runs.
Geez i hope he fails again an we can get rid of him an go with a real bowler, an a proper batsmen.

With Lee an Clark looking like returning in time for Ashes our bowling depth looks good again.
Johnson and Siddle have pretty much secured there spots so Clark Lee and Hilfy will all be battling for the 3rd bowling spot.
I would go with Hilfy for his swing in eng

So we can either Play 3 quicks an a full time spinner (my preferred option)
Or they can go with 4 quicks an make katich, north an clarke do the spin bowling.

No room for ranga in any of those scenarios.

Because with 6specialist batsmen + keeper batsman our batting depth should be long enough and good enough.
And with 4 specialist bowlers all picked on bowling ability + part time spinners our bowling should be good enough to take 20 wickets.

It'd be a nice piece of symmetry to wrap up a pretty epic 6 Test series if SA win this one anyway.

South Africa are nearly 200 runs in front, and still have seven wickets in hand.

How good was McGain.

Bowled like Glenn Trimble....bring back Beau Casson!!!
Seriously, whoever said McGain was a better chance of making the Ashes tour if he did NOT play in the 3rd test was onto something. I can see us using 4 quicks (not including indoor cricketer Andrew McDonald) plus North's offies in England.

Better off having the four quicks, with Katich, Clarke and North sharing the spinning duties.

It will be interesting once Lee and Clark get back into the side, because there are going to be two unlucky bowlers missing out, and they are likely to be Hilfenhaus and McDonald (even though he's been a s**t all rounder, his bowling has been quite good).

Yeah, I was thinking they'd only take one of Lee and Clark to the Ashes but Nielsen seemed to indicate last week that both would probably go if fit. Hilf will definitely go but I think you're better off playing the 4th best quick rather than McDonald. Maybe something like Johnson, Siddle, Lee and Hilf/Clark.
IMO James Hopes or even Geeves would be better options bowling and batting number 8/9 than McDonald. Lee would be ideal if he gets back bowling around 150kmh and his batting strengthens the tail.
McDonald's bowling at 120-125kmh lacks penetration against good batsmen unless the pitch suits him.

If we go with 4 quicks we will have a pretty scary bowling line up and the bonus is if lee an johnson play they can both bat better than Macdonald.
Johnson
Siddle
Hilfy (swing in england)
4th spot between Lee an Clark

Spin job to be done by part timers since they are just as good as any spiiners we have goin around in state cricket.
Trouble is we must find a spinner because they are needed for places like India, sri lanka even england.

Local boy Johnson's first ton - edging closer and closer to being a real all-rounder. He really is quite a beautiful batsman to watch when he gets going.

Seriously, if the ranga can be called an all-rounder then surely MJ deserves to be. He's a better batsman and a better bowler.

Well 3-3 over the 6 match series seems a pretty fair reflection to me.

Congrats to Steve Bucknor on a great career too (because I know he and his family will be logging on shortly just to read my thoughts on him). He's been one of my favourite umps for a long time.

And well done to the Aussies for getting out just in time for the Liverpool game to start and saving me the problem of having to flip back and forth.
