Yeah, fairly open-ended, but depends entirely on how we go getting real jobs. I'd like to stay in Europe until the end of next summer, at least, then do a decent South American trip on the way home. A couple of friends are getting married soon though so I may squeeze in a flying visit.

has anyone done any decent treks across our great land? like just hopped in a van and gone for months on end?

I like most people have probably hugged the coast. Ive been up the west coast from perth as far as ningaloo reef, up the east from melbs as far as the daintree... but not in the guts.

Was in cairns last week and drove past a sign saying ' the savannah way' Cairns to Broome. It really piqued my interest and now i have a great urge to take the road.

Anyone done anything like it? north south or east west, across the nullabour?

Not sure there is anything there mate to be honest.

A whole lot of red dust and sand.

Some bare, low mountains and a few rocks here and there.

Nah, in all seriousness, I would love to get to the red centre one day. My family did a trip to the Flinders Ranges a few years ago but I was unable to go, which was a pity.

Come to think of it, I've really not been particularly far inland. Doubt I've ever been more 500km from the coast, as the crow flies anyway.

My sole large road trip was a three week trip all around Tasmania, which was sensational.

People overseas have zero idea how inhospibable our country is. I recall people in London saying, yeh i think ill fly into perth and drive across to melbourne, the flight is $100 cheaper..

We can drive 2 days and still reach nothing, in europe go any more than half a day and its the next country.

But it got me to thinking, as i looked at the savannah way on the map... it gave me an idea (of sorts) To aid tourisim, maybe we could establish a few travellers oasises along an east west and north south axis through the mid of aus, like a days drive apart or something. I know now all you have is like a service station or truck stop or something.

Imagine a few rocking oasises full of backpackers, a caravan park, a pub, a few things to do, markets, aboriginal guided things (thats how it would get the go ahead, all profits going their way). It may take away the thought of knwoing you are seeing red sand for 2 weeks on end, and if you run out of fuel you die.

These places wouldnt have to turn into vegas or palm springs types of things in the middle of the desert. More like places you would pitstop for a day or two, with a bit of atmophere - travellers atmosphere,

Ive hit 31 of these cities and missed a few that i was an hour or two from like Athens or Istanbul, but i reckon they have missed some pretty good choices!

Cape Town
Reykjavik
La Paz
Munich
Ljubljana
Brugge

at very least!

its fair to say im a bit jaded now re travel and cant think of many places that im burning to go to but there are two absolute standouts top of my list for ages and have never left, Zanzibar and Lhasa, they are the carrots that keep me going...

How bout you lot, agree with the list? been to many? many missing?

Only been to Sydney, New York City and Hoi An from that list.

By the way, looks like it might be New Zealand for me this summer. Trying to work out details now- we'll only have two weeks at most, and I don't think that's enough time to do a comprehensive job of both North and South Island, so we're currently trying to work out which one we'll do.

Two weeks definitely not enough to do both casually, let alone comprehensively.

Depends what you're more interested in. North is way more populated and South is very very scenic and has a few more touristy places.

Cool stuff in the North Island: Rotorua, Lake Taupo, I assume Bay of Islands, Wellington. Auckland is alright but I much prefer Wellington.

South: Christchurch, Queenstown is a must but probably more suited to winter months (still great fun in summer though), Milford Sound (day trip, you can go there from Queenstown and do a boat trip, highly recommend), Dunedin (Cadbury factory, need I say more), Mt. Cook, Fox Glacier. There's also a town near Queenstown called Wanaka which is on a lake which I guess would be a nice place to go on a day trip to, and it has a great 'museum' called Puzzle World with a giant maze.

Basically go to Queenstown. I was a little surprised it wasn't on that top 50 list to be honest, not that I can really compare.

31? Great effort!

Travelers do love their lists! Of those I've been to New York City, London, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Berlin, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Sydney, Bangkok, and Prague.

Istanbul and Prague were probably my favourites to visit. Would love to live in NYC one day, and London I think, is a pretty exciting place to spend a couple of years in your 20's.

I do want to go to most of the others mentioned. In particular Petra, Rome and Jerusalem for it's natural wonders and history. But amongst others the next on my list, that I never got to when in Europe were Dubrovnik and Budapest, mainly for the nightlife.

Can't think of many other cities that could be on the list, Munich as mentioned, or a city in Canada... Vancouver/Toronto perhaps? Oslo? I haven't been to many other cities yet!

Cheers for that. I actually have a vague aspiration of climbing Mount Cook, but I suspect it's more time consuming than what our time would really allow, and it's possibly beyond my expertise- given the highest mountain I've climbed at this point is Mount Bogong and that's only half the height.

I do love true mountains though, and I suppose you have to start somewhere.

It's funny how travel like anything is just about personal opinion and nobody is wrong but when someone at work goes to the USA or something for a second time over Europe, and has never been to Europe I can't fathom it! I try so hard to talk them.Into Europe, has anyone gone and not been in awe? it's Europe! the centre of everything for ever!
