Fitzroy v Werribee
U19 Section 2 Grand Final - Trevor Barker Oval

Life is wonderful! Winning isn’t everything, I know that but when you win and when you absolutely deserve to win, life is wonderful.

The Fitzroy u19s have found the last few seasons tough going. Last season, in particular, tested the resolve of some boys. It saw them bundled our of the Premier division back to Section 2 where it started the season very much under the radar of the pundits who did not rate them at all. To be fair though, the pundits did not know and could not know of the magic that was about to happen.

It all came to a magnificent conclusion on Sunday at Bruce’s favorite football ground, the Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham! The boys gathered early and were in great spirits. Steve Hurl took them through the warm up and Bruce spoke briefly about the game. They were ready to go and rip it apart but the Section 3 Grand Final went to extra time and they had to cool their heels for 20 minutes! Eventually they took the field and under crisp blue skies, they started the game on fire with 2 early goals.

Werribee, who we hoped would be exhausted from their Preliminary Final battle, settled and responded well. The first quarter was a good contest but Fitzroy just had the edge and led by 13 points at the break.

The 2nd quarter was the football that all the Fitzroy faithful hoped to see. The boys turned it on and it was a joy to watch. The League’s highest goal scorer, Joe Hill, decided it was time to stamp his authority all over the game and he kicked 5 goals. You just have to love this guy! The midfield dominated everything. Baker, Leech, Dalton, Edwards, McCormack were unstoppable. The Roys added 8. 8 to Werribee’s 1. 2 to go in at the half time break with an unbeatable 61 point lead.

You have to give Werribee credit though. They would not go away and would not lay down. Still, who wants to win a Grand Final by 100 points? Fitzroy looked Werribee in the face and said “ Bring it” Bring it they did, just the way you would expect from Werribee. They kicked 7 goals in the 3rd, reducing the margin to 34 points. Some Fitzroy hearts beat a little faster!!

Bruce was not overly concerned though. Calmly he told the team that they had withstood the challenge from Werribee and then asked “How much do you want it?” The boys responded emphatically. Werribee continued to fight it out and threw everything at them but they held firm. Diarmuid, the captain led from the front all day. He was courageous and defiant, he was a calm head when needed and kicked 4 goals in his best game for the year.

The final score: Fitzroy 19. 8 – 132 defeated Werribee 14. 9 – 93. Luke Baker was awarded the medal for Best on Ground. No argument about that at all!
What a great way to finish an unforgettable season!
