Former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, later a Leftist critic of the Liberals, has died.
What a charmer Bolt is.
I don't think God would approve of either party in both countries.I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr Fraser during his unsuccessful campaign of 1983. He was to speak at the high school next to where I lived in Box Hill and I thought I'd go over to see him. When I arrived I was told only Liberal Party members were to be admitted and since I wasn't a citizen I could not have become a member. Luckily two friends who were LP supporters saw me and explained that I was an American supporter of the party, so I was let in. After the speech my local MP called me over to meet Mr Fraser. I had met and contributed to the local MP's campaign and had his campaign sign in my front window at home. My MP introduced me as "one of our American friends". The Prime Minister was quite cordial and asked me about my time in Australia. It was a moment I will never forget.
Of course both of our politics changed after that. I switched my support to the ALP in the 90s and after being a registered Republican(US) for 25 years I became a card carrying member of the Democratic Party here in 2000 after my return. And I did meet President Obama and talked with him in 2004 when he was running for the US Senate here in Illinois. I also met President George Herbert Walker Bush in 1970 when he was running for the Senate in Texas and visited the University I attended in San Antonio. Bush lost that election just like Fraser did after I met them. Thank God President(Senator) Obama won in 2004!
It is a complete misrepresentation of Fraser's politics to describe him as moving to the left post holding office.
He didn't move left, the country moved hard right.

Okay, maybe you should answer this tomorrow but why does one have to automatically show respect for the recently deceased?Sigh.... Here we go again....
As it was with Gough Whitlam, this is a thread for tributes. It you can't leave your politcial bias at the door, don't post.
The man has just passed away. Show some respect.
I thought the answer was obvious - consideration for those grieving over the death of someone they loved.Okay, maybe you should answer this tomorrow but why does one have to automatically show respect for the recently deceased?
Probably because people with overly negative views of the deceased come in and post inflammatory comments, thereby turning the discussion into a shitfight.Still, when you're ready, please explain. I remember the state funeral of Pratt. I think I got banned here at the time because I was bemused at all the bullshit said about the prick. Was told the guy had just died, give respect.
Fair enough. I wasn't specifically referring to BF though. More wondering about the phenomenon in gereral.Probably because people with overly negative views of the deceased come in and post inflammatory comments, thereby turning the discussion into a shitfight.
Examples would be to call the deceased "a prick" or to label good things being said about him/her to be "bullshit".
The mods probably think that it isn't the best way to represent BigFooty in regards to someone who has just passed. And I agree.
Man of the peopleCattle auctions
Was he the last of the Menzies era cabinet ministers?
As with Gough, if you want to have a discussion on him, create another thread. This thread is a tribute thread, hence the title of the thread; off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't want to show respect, don't post in this thread. Simple.Okay, maybe you should answer this tomorrow but why does one have to automatically show respect for the recently deceased?
