2nds West Coast Eagles WAFL Watch 2024

To preserve the surfaces for Afl teams.
Round one had Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Melbourne all playing at the MCG.
If you had Curtin Raisers that will be 8 games and especially in winter it would destroy the surface

Vic sides could host the reserves games at Punt Road, Princes Park, Arden Street, Whitten Oval etc. Ie where their VFL sides are playing now.

Don’t think that’s an issue.

Except McInnes signed on as captain after being delisted.

McInnes was still on our list in 2019 when he captained the Beagles

Moved to Perth team in 2020 when we had no team due to covid and hubs

I also think we are restricted from getting WA players we’ve delisted to join the Beagles unless they’ve played for us for several years. (I may be wrong on this)

So the likes of Clark, Winder, Foley etc aren’t available to us. And as someone else posted they aren’t going to be that intent on playing on with the side who just delisted them

Nelson is a different case as he was treated well by the club and was kept on in an off field role as well. He also had no WAFL club affiliation

As for the 12 listed players that ran out yesterday-

Harvey Johnstone (18) - pick 49
Coen Livingstone (18) - Cat B rookie
Clay Hall (18) - pick 38
Jordyn Baker (19) - Cat B rookie
Tyrell Dewar (20) - Cat B rookie
Harry Barnett (20) - pick 23
Jai Culley (21) - MSD pick 1
Zane Trew (21) - rookie draft

They’re all young and/or low draft picks.

Sheed is experienced but on the comeback from a significant injury with no preseason match practice

Gaff, Witherden and, to a lesser extent, Edwards are more seasoned AFL players however

Disappointing result without question and we should have done better but let’s not pretend we sent out a powerhouse unit

The Eagles have also received a slight increase in player recruitment points – up to 70 from 65 – and the removal of the three-year barrier will allow the club the chance to retain delisted WA players with fewer than three years’ service on the AFL list.

Thanks for the clarification

Still seems like the WAFL are putting as many barriers up as possible.

True, but he had signed on for 2020. He and Brady Grey were still in the side for the pre-season games before Covid hit.

"Listen mate, we've cut you from the list. Your AFL dream is over. But pweeetttty pweeasssse play for our WAFL side where you can get paid * all to get spanked every week in front of a crowd of three?? No? Moving back to your home state? Fair enough"
Its not the worst deal. They get to stay in
contact with the mates they've made over the years. They will be going back to a regular job anyway. Its not like WAFL is going to support you by itself.

Never heard of phones, email or driving to someone house for a visit?

I’m sure those who have been delisted are still
Allowed to be friends or talk to current listed players… they can’t be put on a banned contact list..

Playing finals, potentially winning a premiership, would be a massive drive for any player delisted from an AFL club.
Playing for Beagles cos I got a fend off from Harley at training...elite levels for grand kids stories

So basically, the team is shizen and can’t win a game, so it can’t attract any good players because they don’t want to play for a shizen team, and without good players the team is shizen and can’t win a game, and so it can’t attract any…

Pretty much. If we decide joining the VFL isn’t viable being a WA side then we should genuinely fold the WAFL side and go back to dispersing our players amongst the league - assuming we can’t find another alignment.

For the majority I guess yeah - also the majority we probably aren’t keen to retain anyway…

But look at a guy like Jackson Nelson, and Hamish Brayshaw before him.

“Thank you for your service to the club, we’ve talked about where we are at with the list and even though we don’t have a place for you at AFL level, we absolutely value you and believe you can play a key role in leading our WAFL team. Your professionalism, hard work and team first attitude is exactly the kind of example we want the young players at the club to follow and we are very keen to keep great Eagles people involved in the club”

Plus other opportunities that no doubt exist when working for the Eagles.

It’s an AFL club. It might be as appealing as a bout of the clap at the moment but it won’t always be that way.

Agree, Perth Demons alignment makes most sense.
Flying semi professional/nigel from accounts players a bit dubious
Maybe Barich & Pyke can work something out
Perth Demons have been down for so long, it is very sad.

they are. The top up players that front up for the Beagles are mostly players that are not good enough for WAFL level and play in the ammos. The Beagles are not a proper football club, as a proper club will have a hierarchy of players (league, ressies and colts) to ensure the best players rise up to the top. Beagles set up is not ideal, having a few core players to go with the AFL players and the rest are drawn from the ammos when needed. im not even sure how the training goes for these players, do they train with Beagles or their ammo club and get called up when needed???

Is all the costs of the WAFL team in the soft cap?

It’s never been made particularly clear what is, or isn’t, included in the soft cap from our WAFL costs

My best guess is that the annual license fee paid to the WAFC (about $600k) and the match payments to top up players aren’t included. But the wages for coaches and support staff are

Information on what is in the soft cap overall is actually quite hard to find

No they are not. But continue to blame elsewhere as that is what the club does and hence never ever fixes the problem. Can you imagine how good some of these WAFL clubs would be if they had the resources and facilities the WCE have.

Its is my understanding the Licence fee is not part of the soft cap, that is simply a club cost. But I am not 100% sure on it and like you said it seems hard to find this out.

it wasn't that long ago the Eagles played at the antiquated subiaco oval.
Once the Eagles join the Afl reserves you won't playing Beagles games on AFL ovals they will be on suburban ovals and maybe worse than current Wafl ovals.

Most games are held at AFL clubs facilities.

Punt Road, Princes Park, Brisbane’s home ground, Arden street, Manuka, Williamstown, the Hangar are all good grounds. Sydney play their VFL games at the SCG.

There’s a couple of far flung venues that aren’t completely up to scratch in Frankston and Coburg and Preston when you’re playing against stand-alone VFL teams, but that’s no different to playing at Steel Blue oval.

you think the wafc are giving the eagles B side the same recruiting concessions as the other clubs?
