Why???????

I realise I'm on the outer here but I like league as a club sport. That's it's core strength, that's how it originated, and that's how it survives.
SOO bores me crapless, it seems to bring out the worst in terms of hype and bs. It also brings out the worst in both states; the arrogance and blinkered vision of NSW and the tedious chip-on-the-shoulder provincialism of Queensland.
I just don't get it.
And if one of our players is injured in one of these idiotic irrelevant circuses it drives me nuts.

No chance of that this year though, thanks god.

It gets like that at times, SOO is ok, i would rather a full Lions tour instead.

They say international RL can't get crowds, i say they are lieing, if they put half as much effort into selling it to the public as they do with SOO, IRL would be heaps bigger.

i dont understand how you can despire what state of origin has become... which is the jewel in the crown of the football calendar generating 10's of millions for all concerned and sellout crowds and a massive television audience and inrivalled passion anywhere else across the football codes.

i suggest a quick trip to queensland during origin will cure your blinkered logic. i strongly suggest a night out on caxton st at the caxton pub during a lang park origin.

its the biggest annual domestic event in australian sport.

Actually littleduck the above quote is exactly what I mean.

And I used to believe the stuff about 'unrivalled passion' until I spent a few years in Melbourne. A few games at the MCG and the shock of realising that the australian game had genuine mass appeal (all classes, women, ethnicity) and as a result was a genuine conversation piece - I saw what league never will be, unfortunately. It's like a group of blue collar blokes in the corner of the bar blowing hard over their schooners.

So after being immersed in it all down there you come back to Sydney and well...I still love my league, but...nah it hurst to much to say it.

And worse, I get back to Sydney in late '03 and first day at work I find...an AFL tipping comp. And no league. I asked some of the blokes on the floor and they said 'oh people just weren't as interested and it died'.

Sure SOO is huge and generates millions of dollars and I'm really really pleased for whoever's getting those millions into their wallets. But it's just a circus and a diversion in the end. And as long as it's the centrepiece of league in this country the code will remain trapped.

Still, as I say, I know I'm on the outer. I spent six years trying to persuade Victorians about league so i'm used to it.

And it's not as if SOO's going to go away is it?

It depends where you work and who the organiser is... I mean I worked at Bankstown for a year or so and organised a RL tipping comp... Got everyone involved (As almost everyone are RL supporters or watch the game)... There are about 3 people who are passionate about AFL and wanted an AFL tipping comp... I told them if they want it they can start it. It never happened...

I now work in North Sydney and their is a RL tipping comp... But people here are Union fans as well as League... No one even mentions AFL. AFL in Sydney I’m sorry my friend is nothing... It is hyped up but it has zero ground support. I admit I got into AFL in 1996 but haven't watched it since (A full game). Most of the interest is from ex-pat Victorians and South Australians... And I’m glad to say a few of them have since become RL supporters (as well as AFL which is great). AFL on the weekend I heard (I could be wrong and if I am I apologised) rated 90,000 on Saturday night and that was the Swans.

I know I’m more passionate about the Bulldogs then NSW Blues and will always be... If you have been to RL games lately the passion is coming back since the Super League war and people are genuine with their love for RL. I have never seen so many women and Children at games... RL is going from Strength to Strength...

For me... Bulldogs are my number one passion then the Australian Kangaroo's then the NSW Blues...

I utterly depise the Rooters and Boncos.
Roosters do however have a very nice looking female supporter base, as do the Sharkies (shire girls snobby but hot). And As for the Panthers, well we have a few nice ones but they are usually more hit than miss IMO, but with their recent success (i know we're ******** atm) the ratio of hotties to mingers is evening out.

I can admire your passion Littleduck for flying the RL flag but you really should spend a few winters in Melbourne before making statements like "unrivalled passion..." and "...biggest annual domestic event in Australian sport". Roll up to the G when Collingwood are playing Essendon, Carlton, Richmond or several other clubs and you'll know all about passion or better still, try the last Saturday in September every year. Go South young man, it's every sports nuts paradise :)
