Simpson injured his arm in the 2nd quarter and didn't return...Tomlinson by far best on, closely followed by Reid.. I thought Haynes was solid in defence as well as the other blonde backman, visser possibly?

Hoppers influence in the 3rd qtr was immense turned the tide and will definitely play AFL this year

Ah, thanks Miksmif, you've answered my query about whether Haynes played. Plus some live assessment. :thumbsu:

It was a cracker game of footy... Giants on had 3 on the bench compared to 5 for uni(I assume it's some rule) so that in itself is a big effort to get over the line...honestly there weren't any passengers I think there was two academy kids who played and more then held their own. I really loved how any time one of the kids started to get roughed up Reid was straight in there to back them up and help

Non AFL sides in the NEAFL are allowed to name a 23rd man. There are some restrictions on who this 23rd man can be, I think has to be under 19?

NEAFL 2016 Round 2

Sydney Swans Reserves v WSU Giants

Note: New Venue and Starting Time

Saturday 9th April 2016
10.30am
Blacktown International Sportspark

The Rhyce Shaw era kicked off with an impressive 20 goal thrashing of the hapless Brisbane Lions but the first home game for the new coach will be against perennial NEAFL powerhouse the WSU Giants. The Giants meanwhile had a fantastic tussle with the mighty Sydney Uni, trailing by 14 points at half time but storming home to win by 20 points.

These 2 teams clashed twice in 3 weeks during the preseason with each team claiming one convincing victory. The Swans unexpectedly turning the tables on their cross town rivals just 2 weeks ago to record an impressive win, with the match also played at Blacktown.

The Giants have had the edge over the Swans in recent seasons, winning all 4 of our matches in the NEAFL regular season by an average winning margin of 83 points. With both teams fielding a strong team this week, with plenty of fringe players on both sides pushing for senior selection, it should be a very competitive game.

Changes
In: Derickx, Towers, B.Jack, Murray
Out: Abe DAVIS (senior emergency), Ben McGLYNN (seniors)

Derickx returns and will share main ruck duties with Nankervis with one resting in the forward line. Towers will play a similar role to his seniors position, across half forward pushing up to the wings. Jack has usually been used in the inside midfield, but in his last practice game he was used more as an outside runner. Murray is a pacy forward flanker who will add potency to our forward line.

Marsh's return to the midfield has been a successful one with the WA native producing two consecutive impressive outings. Dawson's versatility has seen him being used in a variety of roles including as an inside midfielder and as a half forward flanker, but with Davis not in the team this week, he could be seeing more time deep inside our forward line as a marking target

2 weeks ago the big danger for the Swans was Jonathon Patton. While the big General has earnt a recall to their senior team, the task doesn't get easier with mobile talls Stewart and Tomlinson likely to cause issues. Tomlinson in particular was dominant in their Round 1 game, picking up 35 disposals, 18 marks and kicking 3 goals as he was utilised all over the ground.

Jacob Hopper, their Academy product who was pick 7 in the last draft was also impressive with 28 disposals and was rewarded with selection as an emergency for their senior side. Defender Zac Williams, who would easily earn a place at many other AFL clubs but can't get a game due to the Giants's strength in medium-small defenders, provides plenty of run from defence and sets up many of their attacks.

They are also slightly weaker in the defence and ruck areas. They lost ex-Geelong ruckman Dawson Simpson who suffered a shoulder injury in their Round 1 match, but will have last year's NSW/ACT ruck Matthew Flynn to deputise in tandem with Tom Downie. Tomlinson and Stewart can also pinch hit in the ruck, while Patfull's promotion to the seniors to replace the injured Caleb Marchbank will put additional pressure on Haynes, Mohr and Himmelberg.

Good to see Finlayson back. Don't see why Jake Barrett isn't in bold. But the thing I like is Lachlan Tiziani - disappointed he missed in the draft last year, but another year to develop, and demonstrate his capabilities... that's really good to see. Hope he goes well.

That's a pretty strong NEAFL team, similarly for Swans. Hopefully it's a good battle. Keen to gauge how the youngsters such as Hopper, HH, Finlayson & Pickett are progressing against a similar strength opposition. Fingers crossed that Nick Haynes gets through unscathed; want to see him back in first grade soon.

1st quarter thoughts

Like the look of Flynn. Mohr calm and collected down back, happy with his progress. Steele a cut above. Thommo both fwd and back - solid.

Umpires might as well be wearing red and white beanies and scarves.

2nd quarter

Steele keeps on keeping on. F#%k Finlayson has some pace - couple of times bursting out of defence and one very spectacular chase down of a Sydney player away down the length of the field.
Wife keeps mentioning the good work of a kid called Spargo(?) one of the top ups. Lays the perfect tackle late in the quarter (think Stevie J on Gregson last week) but of course it goes the other way because the umpires have added a red and white jumper to their scarves and beanies.

Memo to umpires: if a player grabs the ball, takes three steps, tries to fend off the defender, and then drops the ball when he is wrapped up. He SHOULD NOT get the free for being held without the ball. Basic stuff really. Oh and under the armpits IS NOT HIGH.

Pickett has been quiet but done a few nice things. Haynes looks ready for a recall. Stewart has been passable - missed an easy shot, was pretty much unsighted in the first, worked his way into it.

Finlayson is super quick. Amazing pace for any player but especially a key tall. Steele was amazing for most of the game but seem to be quiet when the swans made the move in the last

Also sorry for posting that swans centric preview here that was meant for the swans board of course but I got my wires crossed somehow.

It was a good read anyway!

Finlayson is super quick. Amazing pace for any player but especially a key tall.

And given he's missed his football last year due to a hip and this year due to a lateral ligament in his knee, the speed was truely epic. That chase down of Rose (?) in the second quarter was awesome - we need a video clip of that one.

Tell me again how Stewart is ranked 1st in the "Best" column for 9 kicks, 3 handballs, 4 tackles, 4 marks, 3 inside 50s, 0 clearances, 1 goal 1 behind and 66 dream team points when Jack Steele has 22 kicks, 10 handballs, 6 tackles, 13 marks, 7 inside 50's, 4 clearances, 3 goals straight and 163 dream team points and he isn't even ranked at all?

I watched 3/4 on the stream and barely noticed Stewart, while Steele was everywhere and in everything.

Something very screwey there.

No live streaming this weekend unfortunately so hopefully someone at the ground can update here, it will be greatly appreciated

Was this today? How did it go?

Giants 96-76 Eastlake

State league affiliate: Giants (NEAFL)
This weekend: Canberra Demons v Giants - Sunday April 17, 9.30am, Manuka Oval

Midfielder Jacob Hopper amassed a game-high 38 disposals – 10 more possessions than his nearest teammate, rookie Sam Reid – in the Giants' 20-point win.

The 19-year-old academy product, who was recruited with pick No.7 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, also kicked two goals, took six marks and laid four tackles to cap his best-on-ground display.

Hopper was named in the Giants' original 25-man squad that faced Port Adelaide on Sunday.

In attack, big man Tom Downie (19 touches) and forward James Stewart (13 touches) also booted two goals apiece, while Reid kicked a major and had nine tackles.
