Barrett again, seriously tough that we can't find a spot for him in the 22
Has been a little up and down on numbers. If he can hold a strong form line for a few weeks, his window is still ajar. It just takes a dip from Steele or an injury to one of our inside mids (touch wood), and he might get a look in before Hopper.

Hopper has to be first cab off the rank.

Suppose we don't have injuries to our mids, and if we want to give Hopper a couple of weeks to get a feel for AFL. It wouldn't be right to put him through 2 years without a senior game.

At some point one of the mature mids, most likely Scully or Griffen, is gonna find themselves with a couple of weeks in the twos.

Alright it's more likely that we get an injury than it is we reach that point, and it's a good problem to have.

Still. Feel bad that he hasn't had a chance yet despite his form. Others like Shiel, Kelly, Whitfield, Coniglio would all have played 15-20 games by now.

You do know his potential total number of games played to this point in his career is 5, don't you?

How do you get the 15-20 figure?

We took him in the last draft mate ;)

Michael Tuck joined Hawthorn in 1971, played only 5 games in 1972 and 11 in 1973. Basically played over 100 reserves games before cementing his spot in the seniors. Had a pretty fair career after that.

Kids today want/expect it all right now.

Nothing wrong with learning your craft.

Now that Lambose has gone, there are no more long-sleeve merchants at the club.

You're not suggesting Hopper will be like Tucky and wear the long sleeves!!??

That was Ahern, injury is his issue this year
No it's definitely Hopper I thought was drafted in 2014 :)

I guess my point still stands somewhat...

Games in first year of our young mids:
Shiel: 12 (2012)
Coniglio: 12 (2012)
Treloar: 18 (2012)
Greene: 19 (2012)
Whitfield: 19 (2013)
Kelly: 18 (2014)
Steele: 7 (2015)
...
Hopper: ? (2016)
M. Kennedy: ? (2016)

With the team getting better, and deeper, each year, you'd expect the trend to look more like Steele and less like Greene. Still if the club thinks Hopper's a future champ then you'd expect him to get 5 or so games at some point.

Like many things, when you enter the "market" will influence your chance of success.

The kids selected in 2011 (Treloar, Shiel and others as underage and zones) had a year playing NEAFL as full-time professionals. They didn't go from kids to seniors in one leap, they had a year preparing. The earliest they could play was 2012.

Given the make-up of the list in 2012 and 2013, there were always going to be opportunities for games that don't exist with an older list. The kids drafted in those years, plus the 2011 picks, had a definite advantage. We didn't have that many older players. But if you look at Whitfield and O'Rourke (for example) you'll see that the better players get picked more anyway.

Finally, in 2012/2013 there was a deliberate "everyone gets a go" selection policy. It went with the "you and your mate" draft policy. From 2014 the "earn your spot" comes in. You'd need to be very good to knock out Shiel, Treloar and Cogs. If you've got a sub, you might use the kids rather than a senior player.

We're now like most clubs that finish mid-table. First years might have to get bigger, learn footy smarts or just wait before they even press for selection. Hopper and Kennedy will have been told that there are things they need to do before their names come up.

Had the best of that quarter.
