Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

The draft night already drags on quite a bit. With a well-designed auction system you could ensure that each pick is allocated reasonably quickly - for instance, 30 seconds to outbid before a pick is 'sold'.

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

Yeah this one is tricky - there isn't necessarily an incentive for the club with the most remaining points to nominate their preferred player, so I agree they shouldn't get to keep choosing if they keep getting outbid. An alternative could be to have the players nominated in...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

As long as the auction is for picks (rather than players), it shouldn't really matter if the auction is silent or not (in terms of incentives). But a silent auction could really change the strategy, as you wouldn't know which players other clubs are targeting - e.g. could see clubs paying more...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

The fact that many nerds are in favour of it suggests it's probably the way the AFL should go. I've heard plenty of arguments against it too, but nothing convincing.

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

Thanks for sharing the paper - I had no idea this is where the DVI came from. Disappointing the AFL only half committed to the proposal - if you are going to use points for one aspect of the draft (FS/NGA picks), why not use it for everything and make it harder to rort. I also think an auction...

    AFL Introduces Wild Card Round

This is not a perfect step down advantage - far from it. If two Vic teams finish 1 and 4, there is ZERO benefit that 1 gets over 4. 2 also get an easier PF than 1 most years if both win the QF. Then there is the massive gap between 4 and 5 (decided on percentage this year), where 4 has three...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

From a 'how much media can be generated' perspective (which is probably high on the AFL's agenda), I suspect it would take some drama out of trades, but we'd probably see more trades go through.

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

Obviously you didn't read the OP... But if you think this will affect the bottom sides' access to picks, do you know what you can do? Just give more points to the bottom sides. As weevil has pointed out, a points system can be made much more flexible. And whoever is willing to pay the most for...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

I've actually modelled it extensively and it works. You've posted your gut reaction. I think you're arguing about allocating picks based on final points balance as opposed to an auction? Note that no team is giving up their first pick by trading in a mid-level player - at worst they are...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

I'm glad you get it! Conceptually it's giving every club a bag of cash (but you get a bigger bag if you finish down the bottom) and saying 'spend this however you like on bringing in players either through trade or through the draft'. Does it give a leg up to the bottom sides? Yes. Does it allow...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

You think teams wouldn't be prepared to move their first pick back a couple of spots to improve this list? Teams trade their first picks all the time (to the point where most first picks are linked to another club), so this is not borne out by the evidence at all. How? You haven't explained how...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

    1. Greater facilitation of trade 2. No manipulation of draft to acquire F-S/NGA by accumulating later picks 3. Greater flexibility around draft strategy 4. No acquiring of free agents without giving up draft capital 5. Greater certainty trading between seasons. There you go, 5 benefits. The...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

The problem with competitive socialism measures is they tend to have unintended consequences. Take free agency compensation, for instance. Higher compensation for lower-placed sides might seem fair at face value, but what actually happens is lower-placed sides choose not to match the contracts...

Opinion The AFL should introduce a 'points' system to facilitate trading

If you're reading out a mid-range player for the equivalent of say a second-round pick, then this may bump up your first pick a few spots - so what, you still have to give something up to get it, and all teams can do this (it's not unfair). The logic also applies the other way. At present, must...

It would literally prevent this - not sure how you came to this conclusion.
