If we finish last, we could just walk him through the preseason draft. Just saying…

Official Club Stuff Carlton Academy - Next Gen & Father/Son/Daughter Discussion II

Ah, right. The system is pretty awful then. Offers clubs no flexibility to bring more talent onto the list. We might have to chase a player and accept Cody is about all we’ll get from this draft.

If we ended up with pick 3, I wonder if we could move up to pick 1, bid on Cochrane and then take the next best player. Bundle up 3 and Sydney’s first to offer Richmond. We’ll end up getting compensation and ensure Cody gets bid on at 3 at a maximum. Or simply offload Sydney’s first for a...

Is there anywhere that says we must use our top 2 picks to match a bid? Because if not, pick 8 and 18 would match pick 2 with a discount.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t trade out a player or two with draft capital for another first round pick at years end. Difficult to speculate at this point, but if we could turn McKay and pick 18 into walker + a second round pick, and keep pick 3-4 for another gun, I’d be looking at that.

    20th AFL Team

Genuine question - would the issues regarding access to games in WA be largely addressed if the AFL had gather round in Perth? I think the biggest barrier to WA3 is the team’s identity. There’s no real group of untapped supporters looking for a new team. Surely providing greater access to games...

Expansion A third team in Queensland? AFL acknowledges QLD3 as a 20th licence option

Fans will always be attracted to better quality football games. It’s probably no wonder vic expats didn’t turn out in droves to watch Brisbane when they were rebuilding. That’s the beauty of having two teams in the city - the likelihood is that one will be competing for finals every year, and...

Expansion A third team in Queensland? AFL acknowledges QLD3 as a 20th licence option

Also remember that having 2 teams in Brisbane means that theoretically all big victorians clubs should play in the city each year. These have large travelling fan numbers, and having a guaranteed game in the Brisbane each year would certainly engage expats/locals who support these clubs. There...

    20th AFL Team

I sometimes wonder if this is actually the best option. 19 teams for a decade. 2 new teams, one after the other, probably realistically diminishes the quality of the league, as we saw with the introductions of GC and GWS. Maybes it’s better to space out the new teams and get better...

    20th AFL Team

Surely the afl wouldn’t be giving a 12th game to that region? Thats 4 times as many games as currently played in Canberra. The afl would have other strategic priorities if they wanted to engage the regions (ie Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, keeping games in Darwin and Bunbury). Wouldn’t the...

    20th AFL Team

Fair enough, appreciate the insight. But I don’t think that invalidates my comment that GWS have not grown so quickly as to suggest 11 games in western Sydney is required in the short term at least. Canberra provides financial security for an expensive expansion. Doubt the AFL will want to step...

    20th AFL Team

But the timeframe question also applies to Canberra. You don’t give GWS more games in Sydney when their growth is modest. A capacity increase is definitely not needed. Whats needed is time to establish themselves. And yes, their numbers have been growing, but very modestly: 2022: 32,614 2023...

    20th AFL Team

There’s a lot of talk about the risk/barriers to a second Brisbane team, but there are barriers for Canberra too. For one, will the AFL actually want to move GWS on from Canberra by 2032? Their membership growth is sluggish and may need further time to develop. Giving them 11 games in Sydney...

    20th AFL Team

This is such a dynamic situation in SEQ, we can’t know that for sure. It’s valid to question the entry of a team in the first half of the 2030’s, but by 2038 - who knows. I understand people in the media and online are generally assuming the AFL will want to put a team in quite quickly after...

    20th AFL Team

Yes, Canberra is less risky. But the ceiling is probably higher for SEQ3. 4 million people in Brisbane by 2050, 550k on the Sunshine Coast vs 700k in Canberra. Even if the new team can only attract 20% of the market in Brisbane by 2050, that’s 800k - more than Canberra’s population, and then...
