Cody Walker (Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country)
Midfielder | 184cm | 26/01/2008

Perhaps Cochrane’s closest rival in the pick one race at this early stage, Walker was tied to Richmond’s Next Generation Academy but has already nominated Carlton as his preferred destination via father-son eligibility. The son of Andrew is highly professional and hard-working, but also has the natural burst of speed and athleticism of his father. The back-end of his year proved just how good he can be as a high-accumulating midfielder rotates forward.

Cody doesn't seem to have grown and was looking short next to Ison in recent photos. Don't think he will be his dads height which is OK

Cal also mentioned clubs think their is a fair gap between Cochrane and Walker. Seems unlikely Walker will be getting bid on at 1 then. I could maybe see it if Richmond finish bottom

According to Cal it sounds like 2 picks to match, no discount, but keeping the ability to go into deficit. Also, closing the loophole that allows you to have more picks then list spots after the draft opens. Although nobody would use that with a 2 pick limit anyway.

If the deficit stays at 1167, and a bid came at 1, we could match Cody with 14 and 18 or 15 and 17. If the deficit is lowered to 836 (equivalent to pick 18) then we'd need 12 and 14. Pick 2 bid would be pretty easy in either case.

Although not sure how they manage deficits for 2027, given everyones natural selections will get pushed down a mile from Tassie.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but some takeaways from today's Gettable...

Matching bids in 2026…
  • AFL pushing that clubs will have to match a bid with their next 2 picks. Likely to be able to go into deficit, presumably into the following season
  • 10% discount will be scrapped
  • Clubs won’t be able to stockpile more picks than available list spots once draft starts.

Dougie Cochrane the clear number 1 next year, gap between he and Walker.

Dogs and Geelong the frontrunners for Butters.

Carlton would have sent Curnow to GC had Walter been available.

Wes Walley has been invited to train on with Carlton reserves. Twomey doesn’t think he’ll get an SSP list spot. White and Hollands training on with the seniors.

The 2 pick limit could actually work in our favour. Can probably orchestrate a 3rd and 4th decent pick in 2026 (late 1st /early 2nd) which we wouldnt be able to do under the current system.

Given the Tassie draft we'd probably be happy to get wiped from 2027 and get more decent picks in 2026.

So given we have Sydney's 2026 First Round (likely pick 1) would we bid on Cochrane if Port dont play nice on any Butters deal? :P

So basically we need pick 10 and 11 (after Cochrane bid) to draft Walker next year (assuming he is pick2).

So this is all sounding like a much better result than the initial rumour of needing two top 10 picks to match an early Cody Walker bid.
The deficit is a big one. If they removed the ability to go into deficit we would need 2 top 10s or close to it. Makes a huge difference.

If it’s 2 picks only, and no discount with this year’s DVI, you would need picks 8+9 to match a bid at 1 without going into deficit.

I think you would actually try and go into deficit. Move picks around so that you use the minimum amount of points in 2026 and get a few decent picks after our first 2 that get wiped. Get wiped from the Tassie draft.

Will be interesting to see what deficit they allow for the Tassie draft

Cochrane has a higher ceiling than Cody at this stage barring a late growth spurt but I find it a bit funny that Twomey is still pushing Dougie as the "clear number 1" line when every time they've faced off against each other Cody has been the clear BOG ahead of him.

Should be good entertainment next year seeing the monthly power rankings between them.
