Yes, have to admit I'm trying to do the same and not quite succeeding. It's so good to see him in our colours training with the group. Thanks for the pics Jen.
I am trying not to get emotionally invested in us getting young hodge, but gee wiz, he has so many of his father's characteristics in how he holds himself. Heres hoping we get him.
He's up against it, got he's work cut out for him to try and crack into our firsts midfield, plus word on the street is Dalton has overtaken him already.Seems to have been forgotten somewhat

Yep, you’re spot on. A lot of the players I played with at Blackburn when I did were at Oakleigh.Fwiw- I was told today if you’re located in Blackburn it’s on the cusp of oakleigh and Eastern so you can choose either club. Jamil may have gotten an invitation for both or one and not the other- which explains how he ended up at oakleigh.
He played some games for Oakleigh as a bottom ager last year. Played as a ruck though but now transitioning into a kpp
Interesting article ….. 4 of the 5 in that pic and you can throw in Butler were drafted in 21 & 22 while trying to address our very average midfield at the time. That planning for today was not triggered by Day getting injured, Worps leaving or not getting Zac![]()
The Day job: How Hawks plan to cover loss of midfield star
Josh Gabelich takes a look at how Hawthorn will fill the holes in its midfield this seasonwww.afl.com.au
I’m encouraged by how long the article was…shows how many options we have. I’m excited by our midfield as i didn’t like the balance with both Worps and Nash in there. Our greatest risk is new mids not knowing their role and our structure breaking down and costing us big games but ultimately this year we will find genuine mids to take us the next step.Interesting article ….. 4 of the 5 in that pic and you can throw in Butler were drafted in 21 & 22 while trying to address our very average midfield at the time. Moorey was playing like Moorey at his best -which is good to see.Enjoyed my first trip down to Dingleland today.
First impression was it might be a gold bar in a dog turd. This place itself magnificent but the local scenery, a wind swept wasteland. Womens field and stand with the standing room concourses at each revolutionary
On a couple of players
Gunston looks like he is 25
Lewis and Butler were cripples this time last year, both moving well
Ginnivan read the wind better than most. I get the feeling he is better than is given credit for.
Impey and Moore look like great leaders at either end of the ground, movement, direction and finding the ball.
Watson getting better, just looks so menacing and quick.
Nash is massive, man of steel. He will be leaving behind bruises every week.
Schubert and Dear look like a future pairing, both had great marking moments.
Both Mraz and Leray had some good moments winning the ball but iffy disposal. Both have a bit of Frosty about them. Hopefully mostly the good bits.
Most of the others as you'd expect.
The most interesting was the mids, in the drills and match sim in seemed to be the possibles and and the probables.
No Jai, so it was Ward, Mackenzie, Finn, Greeves, McDonald, Hustwaite, Ginnivan & Nash. All had their moments but McDonald impressed finding his way through traffic, Greeves gets to the right spots. Thought Ginnivan was the best in transition or spread as opposed to stoppage work.
That's how I saw it.
This is to positiveTraining Update:
The Wind dominated. Tough conditions, skills were good considering.
The law firm: McKenzie, McDonald & Ward - all had their moments in the 40 minute scratchy. They look fit and primed - they’re gunna dominate. HH was also good. Butler looks superb.
Ollie G is ready to play AFL if called upon. He’s a great size and runs to the right spots. High football IQ, I have no concerns at all about his running - the kid can play.
MRaz he’s a dead set gem. I’d be playing him round 1. 12 Year CHB locked in, it’s his.
McCabe in the rehab group. He’s now got an AFL body. Looks like a stallion. Not sure what niggle he has, was moving well, not yet at top speed. I think he’ll see AFL time this year if he’s injury free.
Nairn also in rehab group, was running at a good click. Doesn’t look far off joining the main group. He’s also got an AFL ready body.
Schubert is going to play alot of AFL. There’s a difference between training & playing. He has a high natural football IQ. Superb hands and moves very well. Kicked goals in scratchy in different ways. Has a-few ahead of him for now but can play AFL this year if called on. He has confidence in his ability.
Both boys vying for a list spot were good. I think Perez will win his spot. He’s also AFL ready - good size, moves very well, and good skills.
LeRay was good, playing back, he will be a player. He’s got considerable upside. Backline is stacked, a year at Box Hill will do him wonders.
The brewery: Wiz, Gin & Moore serving up specials. They are in everything, smart, fit, creative.
Jack and the 2 bean stalks: all looking fit, gunna cause havoc. Mitch Lewis is probably in the best nick of his career, he’s going to feast - expecting a 50+ goal season. Uncle Jack is moving great, Chol is such a beautiful shot at goal and moving very well.
Nasha the basha is setting himself up for a big year. Looks fit and strong.
The lefties: Karl, Jack & Maz - sublime and a new lefty in Dalton looks a player. I like him. His hands down low are great and runs all day. I had concerns about his kicking but the rumours are grossly over exaggerated. His kicking is excellent.
Sicily just easing into it - didn’t participate in the scratchy.
Ned dominated centre square hit outs. He’s also moving well but Lloyd dominates everywhere else.
Rama is AFL ready. His forward craft is also good. I think he goes past Noodles.
TB, Battle, Hardwick just rock solid.
Impey his usual self - great
Weddle: Extracting the urine. He’s on another level. Watching him burst out of a centre bounce clearance in the second half of the scratchy will warm the hearts. He is the standout player in this group.
The list is mature and bats deep. We’re gunna be tough to beat.

Probably the two questions I'd have are relating to the midfield.
For a few years we have hesitated to give McDonald too much midfield time, often when he was in a CB the ball would be walked out of there quite easily by the opposition - what has changed for him to suddenly be looking like a good midfielder?
Secondly, how are Weddle's traits translating to midfield play? I would probably have thought he doesn't really have the bend or midfield craft to be an effective midfielder, winger maybe but I'm curious to hear the track watchers thoughts.
Thanks a lot Coach Killer ... you have made my day (month).Training Update:

Great report, thanks. I like the way you start, much like the Axeman used to, with a poetic description of the day and conditions. Keep it up.It's 8am, on a lazy Saturday morning, the sun is very high and you can feel the warmth of the sun.
This will be the last KCC oval training for the team before they head off to Torquay this coming Tuesday.
McCabe, Blanck, TB, Bread (Nairn), Calsher, Harry are all in the rehab group wearing white.
Bodie Ryan is back with the main group.
Later I noticed that there are a few players who stayed mostly indoors like Amon, Weddle and the newbies Schubert, Dalton, Greeves, Le Ray.
At one moment "Bread" took off his shirt and Sam teasingly ask Bread if he has those abs before.
Sam added that he wants to have some of those chisseled abs himself.
The day started with some warmups which is followed by a "Kick to advantage" drill for one group and "Handball drills" on another group.
Later from where I was standing (near the goals), Hickmont asked Gunners to kick the ball to the tall forwards while coaching at the same time.
The tall forwards then did a 1:1 marking contest.
Reeves vs Ramma with Meek vs Lewis alternating.
Chol joined later on matching up against Meek.
Reeves vs Ramma was almost dead even, even though Reeves has sneakingly grabbed one mark while taking advantage of his height.
Chol outmarked Meek a couple of times using his forward nous.
Ramma looks in a good nick, I just don't know how he can make it to the 23 with lots of players ahead of him.
I have noticed that Mccabe is pushing himself in his solo jog/run around the oval.
In some session, you can notice that Ginni's positioning is elite but very underrated.
Later the group near where I'm at are practicing on "switching the ball" and getting out the ball from the defensive 50 quickly transitioning to a goal.
From the far side of my vision, I can see another group doing some midfield drills.
From a small snippet that I have seen, Croc is continuing his solid form in the midfield, Butts continues to impress with his kicking and hustle. Frenchie and Huss were given (and will be given) an opportunity to take one of the Worpel/Day spot. Frenchie's kicking and confidence seems getting back. He just need to bring them back to the actual games.
I have caught Butts firsthand bantering a few of his teammates. Maybe thats why him and Nash were in a tussle a week back.
Hopefully he do it on an opposing player this coming season.
The trainers asked BMac and Perez (who I personally think we will sign) are doing some groundball gets and one two drill on the side.
Meek and Mass were the last 2 players at the oval (which I have also noticed in the previous years) that is becoming a positive habit.
They are doing last minute goal kicking practice.
I haven’t caught it in the pic or vid but Mass gave a goalkicking pose after hitting a goal from a tight angle on the run.
Then he looked at me (as the only person there) like saying "have you seen that".

Go ramma! Yeah feed CMAC! Feed him the ball and he'll do the rest!Cmac is a creative, smart midfielder, he doesn’t have the body strength of Jai, Nash, or Greeves, he towers over Cmac. In the tackling exercise Ollie was too strong - he’s a massive unit, but CMAC has craft, knows where to run and is quick with his feet and decision making, picks the right options.
I’d be instructing everyone to give him the ball as soon as they can - much like Geelong use to use Gablet and the pies currently use the Daicos boys. In fact that’s probably the best example to use - McKenzie & McDonald (Daicos boys) both fit that bill - give them the ball if they’re in the area at all times - they’ll carve up the opposition and create 10 goals a game between them. They are very similar.
Weddle - is on an another level - he can’t be measured against mere mortals - there’s nobody on our list that can go with him - it’s men v boys stuff, even during training drills.
He waltzed around them, almost effortlessly, whilst playing midfield, and left them in his wake bursting forward from centre clearances. He then went for a trot down back taking intercept marks, then in the same play took off again and galloped forward to create an option - it’s frightening. I can’t recall another player quite like him. The power in his movement is ridiculous.

I like the Daicos boys analogy for Frenchie and CMac, we just need to work out who will replace Worps as the hard nosed extractor who can feed them (Dalton and Reeves not without a sneaky chance of having a crack at this role this year)Cmac is a creative, smart midfielder, he doesn’t have the body strength of Jai, Nash, or Greeves, he towers over Cmac. Ive been in the camp of those that don't think Wedds is suited as playing as a inside midfielder due to lack of midfielder "craft" but when you are packing the kind of V8 Wedds is maybe that's not an issue as you just grab the ball from the tap and put the pedal to the metal!
Really we need to make a new position for Josh. Something like "plays wherever the hell he wants" position.

And I don't think Dalts will be attending many CBAsNot sure Reeves will be replacing Worps unfortunately.![]()
