Longmire was asked the question. He didn't raise it.

Probably answered it poorly, but as usual, it's the media blowing this up more than it needs
Longmuir.

And he’s right to have a crack. Teams that have already had the opportunity to blow out the cobwebs have a strategic advantage over sides that haven’t played yet. Common sense.

Listening to Mark Duffield this morning, and apparently it’s something that we’ve lobbied hard on behind the scenes.

It’s an unnecessary issue that can be easily avoided and should be avoided. The AFL are letting the broadcasters call the shots without worrying about compromising an already massively compromised competition even further.

What was tge reason behind neither WA team being allowed to play at optus?

Woman’s Asian Cup Soccer Tournament had a 2 week lockout

Semi final is played there tomorrow night

Nobody gets everything they want with the fixture. Every club would change things in their fixture if they could.

And there is no statistical evidence backing Longmuir up that clubs starting their season a week earlier have an advantage in Round 2 of the season over clubs who didn't start a week early.

It looked to me like the Malthouse tactic of a coach throwing out an alternative headline for the media to bite on after an embarassing loss.

I doubt he is that clever to be honest.

He just thinks there is no reason for half the teams to wait a week to start their season...which is true.

'Grow the game in the Northern States' - ok, play 4 prime time fixtures there in Round 1 - why would it matter if footy is also played that week in SA, WA and Vic?..

It is not going to be an issue for too much longer anyway because the unspoken part of this the bye it creates for a big chunk of the league from the get-go.

The players have pushed for 2 byes a season for a long time and this helps facilitate that, albiet in a joke of a way for the 'irrelevant' clubs (a bye before the season starts.)

....but fear not, because when Tasmania come in and we have 19 sides there will be at least 1 team with a bye every week and given the league will need the flexibility to make that work, I think 'Opening Round' will be quietly pushed aside.

Until of course the temptation of having 10 games a week to sell becomes too much and we end up with another mouth to feed...

Um, wat?

OR teams vs non-OR teams the next week is currently 10-4 in favor of OR teams. Seems like what most people would call an "advantage".

Idiot Caro forgetting a flag whilst slamming Freo.

Small sample size, though. If all 14 games had a 50/50 win probability, there would still be a 9% chance of the score being at least as lopsided as 10-4. It may well be an advantage, but I'm not yet rejecting the null hypothesis that it isn't ...

I'd back the coaches and ex-players who have come out and said it's a clear advantage, over Caro TBH.

I hate Caro. But i do agree with her that Freo are making a mountain out of a molehill. They lost a game of footy from a position where they should have been able to comfortably win it. Thats life. Look in the mirror, take responsibility, think about what you would do differently next time, and get on with it. They are still carrying on about it today.

Agree with this and also agree with Jlo. Opening Round is dumb but it's not the reason Freo lost and he came across as a sook bringing it up after the game. Geelong played in Opening Round, got pumped, then came out and conceded 50 in a quarter in Rd 1, and only then (After a bake from Chris Scott) woke up and started playing properly. It's not like Freo ran into Gold Coast after a tune up against the reigning Grand Finalists or anything...

What is the deal with media outlets trying to turn nobodies into personalities?

Whether it's Timberpenis or Ryan Daniels over here, Mitch Cleary, Cal Twomey, Jay Clark, Damien Barrett etc.

Print journos are like umpires. Just do your job in the background, I don't need to know your name.

To be fair I don't think that's what Jlo said, he was asked a question about whether OR is a competitive advantage and he answered it

Traditional media is ceding ground to new digital media every day so they're trying (and failing) to adapt

Caro is an idiot - but would expect nothing less from the person that had the audacity to lecture premiership-winning Captain Chris Judd that the MCG was a 'neutral' venue on grand-final day for the 2018 grand final.

If one team started the game with two goals already on the board, and then their opposition still won, would you say 'see? two goals being on the board isn't an advantage because the other team still won!'

Something can be BOTH unfair and surmountable. That doesn't make it right.

edit: and all the AFL/fox-footy media shills waxing about how great opening round is makes me wanna barf. just toeing the company line; completely unrepresentative of the footy going public
