Autopsy Round 8 | St Kilda vs Carlscum

Marshall with 3 and done well in the ruck

Thoughts ?
So glad I WOULD NEVER have traded him.
Carlton aren't terrible but they are psychologically fragile.
They’re really a one trick pony. They had a very basic stoppage structure that was killing us with clean ball out of contest in the first half (thankfully they kicked poorly for goal). Once Ross could adress that at halftime it looked a completely different game. Shut their outlet and started to win it at the source ourselves.
Far from a perfect game but good teams win when they’re not on, good sign for us.

Slept in it and thing the second half was

Full on end to end ball movement in Q3, then went into sleep mode in Q4.

I loved watching the hope drain from the faces of the feral scum, especially the sheila with the different coloured hair in their CS, I see every f***ing time we play those kents.

I liked Pou's game. He's going well in this more half forward role, leading up and using his strength. Really good to see him finding form.
The first part of this year was playing him with a view to work on his ‘weaker’ aspects to his game.

The last few games have allowed him to play to his strengths, playing a half-forward role.

When Henry was pushed in the back after the goal was kicked, Nas remonstrated and a fracas ensued.

It was right at the fence.

What would’ve been a 10 year old boy leaned over the fence, stuck his finger up several times and was clearly yelling ‘f*ck you’ to every Carlton player involved.

THAT is the future we are fighting for. Bring that boy’s passion to every game and we will improve out of sight.

Go the Saints. And to quote the great young fella who involved himself in the fracas, F*ck you Carlton.

What a tremendous leader and man of character Brad Hill is. Exceptional.
I wouldnt have imagined saying this a few years ago, but he'd actually make a better co-captain than Sinclair (nothing wrong with Sinclair btw) - a true leader.

Especially from where he had to come back from. His story at St Kilda is immense. Hope he cracks 300 games this year so we can celebrate him properly.

I don’t think it’s fair to label it a half forward role.

He is also getting time on ball.

The splits are much better recently for Hall and Pou in that role.

The ruck forward split for Marshall and TDK.

The half back splits for windy and Flanders.

Much much better.

Nas too, worst I've ever seen him kick. Wilkie lost contests he'd usually win with his eyes closed. All were really good still but made errors none of them usually would.
Nas's best passage of play down the wing ironically had a clanger in it.
He kicked it straight to the opposition who basically threw it to another of ours

That first half was gross. Skills, system everything was off. Probably lucky to stay as close as we did. But then the good part of our bipolar side kicked in.

I do give the coaching a tick though. We held Garcia back in the first half then released the Hugo. We must have planned to hold them close and then surge. St Kilda and Sydney who have a dour history all of a sudden look like the sides that are high scoring while sides like Collingwood are locking games down.
And yet we were 2 goals down. Anybody could see things hadn’t clicked into gear yet, and still we were right with a team who usually goes huge in the first half.

Piss soaked mattresses galore with crystal-ball certainties being thrown around. All went very quiet after that of course 😎

A mature victory from an emerging team 👏🏼

His kicking has been excellent so far this year, not the liability he used to be.
I'll admit I was worried everytime Dougal had the ball in the defensive 50, expecting him to shank it or turn it over. His kicking was very good.
To be honest I think his disposal has always been pretty good. We're probably a bit harsh on him because he has been out of the team for a bit, so the main things we remember is the moments where he has coughed up the ball resulting in goals.

So, after an early scare, but then a very pleasing win.
We move on to next week.

Ins. Collard, Higgins, Ryan, Wilson

Outs. Butler, Carroll, O'Connell, Stocker

Carroll has improved but just dont think we need him atm

O'Connell has improved, just dont think we need him also atm

I know it’s only 1 game for Collard at half-back in the vfl team. But gee he looked good there, we could do with his speed & elite kicking.
Sounds like Higgins concussion was sustained at training. Concussion protocols is 12 days, so does he miss next week against GC also??

I just don't see them as best 22 in a years time, so I'd have Tauru, Boxshall and after today - Collard ahead of them.

If I'm wrong about Carroll, and O'Connell tell me I'm wrong, I just don't see it. I don't see it with Caminiti either - but Grant Thomas thinks he has something so I feel like I'm wrong about him lol
I know he’s young but I don’t see it with Caminiti either
To me he either makes it down back when Howard goes …or he doesn’t
He looks lost up forward…almost wooden in his movement/thinking
You can see that if a few of these kids go next level …pressure to hold your foot in the side huge
I mean Woods been great but he’s getting on…if young Banfield keeps building…even Travaglia …I have faith he’ll come good ….Tauru ….gonna be tough to squeeze them all in
I would love an electric Collard off HB ….who can run and use the footy and break sides open …

Collard did ok in the VFL, and he has excellent disposal by foot, though did make some decision errors too, just need follow up with another good game. Carroll also has excellent disposal by foot and is probably stronger than Lance and is doing a good job. Boxshall was our best in the VFL game and must be considered for a recall. I presume Henry will take Butler's place, and Wilson for LoC, then there's Ryan and Higgo to come back. Good to have a bit of selection pressure on.

He is literally the most accurate kick on the list.
The myth that he turns it over is just that. It comes from his brainfades that are very few and far between.
I am an advocate for a key backman and he held MacKay goalless last night, allowing smaller backs like Wilks and JSOS to do their thing.
Now he was helped of course by the midfield who stopped the quick ball coming in, the mids dont win that battle and no backline can stop it getting to the forwards.
Structure down back is so better balanced with Howard there.

Its a real shame we didnt play him against Adelaide as probably be the difference

Collard is NOT in after a single game in defense where he made plenty of errors. Collard is PROMISING after the game.
Butler out means that Henry holds his spot with Higgins back. Henry was good, but i felt he wasn't defensive enough at times.
Doubt Higgins will be back.
If he only got symptoms yesterday they will take extra care with him, especially with his history. Liam Ryan back hopefully.

Great game - and with all the self-congratulation going on here, I will say that I too have been calling for Doogs to return since the first game.

Could mention so many players, but…

Mitch - jeez what an incredibly tough dude he is, and his goal kicking has improved outtasite ( don’t stop practising Mitch).

Coops and Hally, my other “loves” wow.
If Sharman can get his kicking back to where it was a couple of seasons back, he could be a superstar. It’ll come, because now that he’s clunking them his confidence is back. He’s looking - dare I say it - a little Roo-like with his workrate, and the goal assists.

Halls HTB on Cripps, twice his size. We have an exceptionally clever pick up here.

Got to go on from here. We all know who needs to come back in - we can match it with the better teams.

I was supremely confident we would run over them.

It was a funny night, my daughters birthday so we had everyone around.

By game time I’m down in the back lounge enjoying some Thai food and watching the game with my son and Carlton tragic son in law. Everyone else is in the front lounge and dining room, not interested in the footy and my son in law gets loud and intense.

First half he’s leaping around, commentating and riding every bump, he’s pumped but is already worrying about a second half collapse. Second half was a thing of Beauty, we had the cake lighting at half time 🤣🤣 now I’m sitting back enjoying a quite bourbon.

He’s coming apart at the seams as we kick 8 in a row, their players are all lousy, weak, Jagga can’t play, florent is so overpaid. By the last quarter all hope has gone not just for this game but it’s i can’t see us winning another game, would we get a 1st if we traded Cripps 🤣🤣.

Turns to talk of how will they ever rebuild and it’s another decade on the bottom.

Carlton hate loosing to us, we didn’t just beat them last night we sapped all the hope out of them. That shot of their supporters flooding out with 10 minutes to play was an absolute highlight.

Great team effort and a shout out to Henry who had a good game first up after a long struggle with injury.
