My thoughts:
  • we are not getting buddy in his prime output.
  • we paid highly (but not as high as those who merely glance at the top line**
  • he looks close but not quite there.
  • our gameplan doesn’t suit al his best strength 1vs1 in forward on lead.
  • he is still scoring.

So overall we paid for 9/10 and we are getting 6.5/10

Not a fail but not the Porsche we were promised.

The funny thing- the best thing he does in my eyes is the 2 or 3 times a game we get SUPER slow ball and just have to kick up thr line, he takes multiple contested marks. That alone has made me feel a lot better as not since Sam Reid have we had that outlet. It has also meant that they have to leave him 1v1 down the line as they have to stack corridor.

WHAT WE ACTUALLY PAID:
**2025 draft was actually improved seeing as though 14 would gotten take by the Kyle bid.
  • additional points for 2025 draft to get talent that we rated that slid.
  • 2026 yeah we give away first but may get McCartney anyway reducing impact.
  • 2027 honestly they could come last and this is like 3 pick swap difference….

That's an interesting take on Charlie's output.

He's also taken 17 contested marks in the 8 games that he's played. Therefore, averaging just over 2 per game.

Not absolutely starring, but not the failure that some are alluding to.

First Crack Preview said that if he was kicking AFL average in goal kicking he would be leading the Coleman
How does that work. If he's kicking the average number of goals, surely he'd be middle of the pack. Or is the average referring to his conversion rate?

I'm very happy we got rid of deadweight Florent and Hayward for Curnow (and Rosas). He can actually take a strong mark and takes the best defender away from Amartey and McDonald. Our forward line actually looks functional this year. I don't even mind giving away our first rounders because we never get those right anyway.

Curnow has kicked 20.17 for the season at 45.5% accuracy. Below AFL ave.

King has 28.7 for the season at 85.5% accuracy. Elite.

Gunston also has 24.17 for the season.

Charlie could easily be winning the Coleman if he kicked straighter.

No point playing ifs and buts. If my aunty had wheels she'd be a bicycle

Conversion rate

His score chart for 2026. On the page itself if you put the mouse over each of the circles it tells you the type of shot (Set shot/General play). It's a small sample size but one thing that stands out is that he is missing many shots from the left pocket, while kicking more from the right pocket. Most of these are set shots. From memory, like many Swans he favours the round corner kicks from set shots from the left pocket, while kicking drop punts from the right pocket. Not sure what he used to do at Carlton but his career shot chart (also available on the page) displays more balanced goals from both pockets.

Seeing him kick a bag was a delight but I think most of us would happily admit he did it against a much weakened side and a particularly weakened defence. Ryan Gardiner, Buku and Busslinger were no hope, whichever of them were playing on him.

What is most exciting for me is that Curnow appears to have taken the Hawthorn game to heart. He got smashed by Barrass. It was a really bad performance that night but since then he's looked much more focused, engaged in the game all four quarters and has been much, much stronger in aerial contests. Even when he doesn't mark it, he's not getting beaten in the air (and nor should he to be honest).

When you look at this stats for the year so far, he's looking much more positive than a lot of people seem to think too. Even prior to last night, he was in the top handful in contested marks, marks inside 50, score involvements, and scoring shots. He's now even higher after last night but of course he has a game in hand on most of his peers. Looking really promising and he has added so much to our forward line.

This clip really meshes with how I’ve seen Curnow so far, I posted this a few weeks ago after his Dogs game and I think it’s bearing out - he’s winning the ball really well, he’s adding a very different dimension of athleticism and ball winning in our forward line after the Hawks game when he got dominated in the air by Barrass. Since that game, he’s been waaaaay more consistent in his aerial contests such that he’s barely getting beaten and winning often. If he straightens up in front of goal, he’ll be in for a big goal total by the end of the year at this rate and in this side.

Got hurt in that contest where he never had it but was htb didn't help

I thought he competed well and the delivery was average.

And I know the haters will say low bar and blah blah get on his bike, I'm not saying he wasn't average , but yeah

I know his assignment is to play out if the goal square but would love to see him on a lead. Just seems to struggle to get separation and too often is in a wrestle with his opponent.
They need to split the "play from the goal square" between the three talls. All of them do better on the move. It's a sacrificial role.

While he’s good for us in a structural sense, and is doing ok, he’s clearly not giving us the star quality we were hoping for. You don’t recruit Charlie Curnow so there’s less pressure on your other KPF’s, although I appreciate the upside. You recruit him to be your main man & he’s nowhere near that.
The irony however, is that our overall forward line looks well balanced and is performing, despite some of the component parts not standing out.
I’d like to see Charlie try getting on his bike and getting more ball around the 50m-70m region, with Joel playing deep & Logan roaming all over. Then again, I guess the coaching team have the strategy side of things covered and are pretty content at 9-1.

He's been important structurally but he is a very good field kick. Can't argue with 9 and 1 and maybe his role changes a bit later in the year.

Look at Curnow from 4-5 years ago he was quite mobile and his leap was a strong attribute not to mention he was a leading forward its why the meme was created from all the frees he would draw.

Carlton completely fudged him that being said im quite pleased with his output 10 games in i thought he would struggle to have much of a impact.
