Senior Coach Selection Panel & Selection Process …

Chief Executive Officer Graham Wright and General Manager of Football Chris Davies will lead the process, alongside Blues President Rob Priestley serving as a conduit with the Board. Former Premiership coach Adam Simpson will round out the group, providing valuable external perspective into the contemporary demands of the senior coaching role.

The group will undertake a thorough assessment of all potential coaching candidates, and in consultation with Football Director Greg Williams, will identify a preferred candidate to take to the Board for approval.

Genuine question.

Let’s say it’s the start of the year, no coaches sacked, would Josh be in the top 10-20 upcoming new coaches that are being talked about now?

Love what he has done but let’s put the honeymoon period aside.
Another question BC.. how long is a honeymoon period.

What if Fraser ends up coaching us to 12 to 14 wins this year, would he become a top up and coming coach that other teams would be chasing?

To give that answer you’d have to recalculate the entire ladder including win/loss/percentage based on the last 3 games, and judge him on a revised ladder position.

One thing’s for sure, im disappointed he ruled himself out so early, because what he has managed to achieve in 3 games should not be understated. If you dont consider the pressure relief an no expectation factor, he has still managed to get the player skill levels up and totally change around, communicate, and implement significant effective change to the the gameplan in his first 3 weeks.

I dont believe the line coaches have made that much difference since they were there under Vossy also.

I might be the minority but I don't want Longmire. Won only 1 of the last 6 finals Sydney played. Was burnt out in the end and quit mid season. Coaching for a big Melbourne club will bring more pressure and scrutiny.
I'd prefer to go after someone younger and hungrier who understands the modern game.

Not liking or want Longmire is fine but I hope you’re not basing it on a figure that isn’t true.

Sydney won two finals in 2024 alone

He won 4 of his last 7 finals

I have two concerns with Longmire.

Firstly, he had the luxury of coaching a lot of top end talent due to the concessions afforded to the northern states. Can he coach a team that doesn’t have an endless supply of talent coming in off a conveyor belt?

Secondly, he did quit due to burn out. How will he handle it when the pressure comes, and it will come.

I’m not saying he wouldn’t be a good appointment because frankly I wouldn’t know, only time would tell.

Just my 2 cents.

The two GF thumpings are a diferent kettle of fish though - imo.

That is when the pressure is through the roof.

I'm not saying he is no good because of that but it is still a bit of a concern imo.

It's funny, when talking about the Swans, I have a different take on them than a lot of others. With all the help theyve been given over the past 45 years (from the league and the other clubs) and the competitive advantages they were gifted, they really should have won more than two flags. Anyway, I'm hoping our club doesnt have a 72 year drought between flags like they did lol.
Look at the difference NGA's and Father Sons have made to the Carlton list and consider the Swans. The foundation of the list is continually gifted to them. They can afford to be aggressive with Curnow because even in 2024, Kyle falls into their lap from the academy. The recruting draft selection is gift wrapped for Sydney, all they have to do is pay the points and focus on development- and all this for a club that has been in Sydney for 45 years. There are rules for some & advantages for others

My only hesitation with Longmire is we have a culture which folds under pressure, usually in the 3rd year of a coaches tenure. Is Longmire motivated enough when things inevitably get tough, when he is pushing 60? That is the call for the coaching panel

I don't like Longmire for the Carlton role.

He had his opportunity and didn't take it. We need to go into our next campaign with energy and fresh ideas.

TA
He didn’t take his opportunity? A premiership, 5 grand finals, and a 60% winning record counts as not taking your opportunity?

In my experience it’s over when the in-law starts coming over unannounced.

Perhaps the line coaches following strict criteria, and once Vossy has left they have had some greater level of input into how each line should operate?

Beggars cant be choosers but lets look a little more closely at those 5 GFs...
  • Won one against Hawks with a team that was still mostly a Paul Ross coached team (Longmire a year after taking the reigns after Roos)
  • Lost the next four with two thumping's!
You've got to wonder about Swans ability to make GFs considering how much leverage there is there?

Looks like Cox is now continuing the same trend...you wouldn't know it was a different coach - still playing pretty much the same way

It begs the question - how much of it is to do with the swans being a well run organisation?

Plus - being well looked after by the AFL....desperate to grow the game in rugby heartland/city.

COLA - ended in 2014 but it helped set up the club for what it is today.

And their elite football academy program that develops young players from age of 11.

One could argue they've been a little underwhelming??

(Edit: + home ground advantage)

Its also good to analyse the positives of changing a coach whilst you’re still successful and doing well, instead of waiting to fall off a cliff.

Geelong won a flag the year after Thompson left and it seemed they just needed a fresh voice.

Sydney won after Roos left and I remember the Saints improved after ditching Thomas and going with Ross.

If Sydney win this year, it will be a good example of a team needing different ideas and that holding on to coaches too long, even when you’re doing ok, isn’t great for success.

2012: Won.
2014: Poor result, but faced possibly the best GF performance in history from their opposition.
2016: Hard fought close loss with questionable umpiring.
2022: Young team like lambs to the slaughter against the Cats.
2024: No excuses. Can only imagine that mental scars rendered them totally lame.

Swans have an inbuilt advantages for sure but to keep up a level of consistency over 350 games of coaching is still compelling.

As others have mentioned the way it ended for Horse was probably the concern for me more so than his record. He really did flame out after the GF belting - that clearly overwhelmed him. Sounds like he completely melted down in the box. Then there were rumours of a fallout with Parker.

But even on his departure he left the club in really good shape. The playing list is great and he had nurtured Cox who was ready to take over.

All that points to a really well run organization - and the coach is the most important part of that. And he's done coaching development work since so he's obviously keen to coach again.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out. It isn't even confirmed that he's part of the process yet.
