wow, surprised Woosha hadn't been in the HOF yet.
So was I, but then I wonder. DId he decline initially?

He would've only been eligible in 2003 but he was already head coach of West Coast at the time.
Due to that involvement, and when it's held, did he decline as to not take away from the team?

But then when 2014-15, 2021-25 came round, people just assume he was already in? Or did they go off the PLAYERS rule of 5 years removed (Doesn't exist for coaches/umpires/officials etc.)

btw - Players have declined before. Most famous was Nick Riewoldt. He declined first year of eligibility as he was US based, was a 2nd time inductee.

Best player I've even seen live in person.

Bar none
Amazing that I could possibly counter that his Dad was….
Fletch & his Dad combining for nearly 700 games between them, followed by Jnr & Snr…..
There’s some bloodlines !!
Dustin & Jnr are gentlemen to boot, kudos.

Gaz is without a doubt the best player i have witnessed in the last 35 years. Fitting that he didn't have wait.
He is without a doubt not the best player in the last 35 years. 25 you have a good argument. 35 years no. He is at best 3rd best. Behind his dad and carey. Then its either ablett jnr or lockett.

Whay is the waiting period for a player once they retire?

You'd think players like Franklin, Fyfe and Martin will be considered soon after their waiting period has ended.

Went to see Freo vs Geelong in 2006, when Ablett was known as a freakishly talented but somewhat lazy player, and Mark Thompson was seen as wasting a generational list.

There are few highlights of this game available but Ablett dominated and kicked a career best 6 goals, including a couple from impossible angles dodging numerous tackles, and we got thrashed by 11 goals.

My Dad wondered aloud, "This kid's better than his Dad."

A Cats fan around us said "Well he's lazy like his Dad, and it's why we won't win a flag until Bomber gets sacked."

Despite getting spanked we then won 9 in a row and finished 3rd while Geelong missed finals. And Gary Ablett Jr. was never heard of again.

Then the following year (2007) was the start of a triple treat of Premierships for Geelong: 2007, 2009 & 2011.....3 Premierships in 5 years and Bomber Thompson was coach for two of them (2007 & 2009).
