Dear Ross,
Play him there.
Leave him there all day.
for at least a handful of games... in a row
Hell- even go crazy and tell him to train as a full time midfielder for ~6 weeks.
What's the worst that could happen?
The best part of hitting rock bottom is that there is nowhere left to fall...
It's not about gaining the right to do pick swaps with other clubs for handing over unused salary cap.
Im pretty sure it would be as simple as- if a team wanted to forfeit $x of their salary cap, then the AFL would in return give them "x" draft pick.
"the League is open to introducing pick...
St kilda fans (en masse) have for literally generations now consoled themselves by cheering on individual champions in (largely) irrelevant teams.
That's why.
It's a coping mechanism.
The AFL is structured nothing like american sports-
For starters it is literally a not for profit and therefore has tax exempt status.
If it went from 30% to 50% of the AFL's billion dollar revenue going to a lucky ~800 footballers (at the expense of that extra 20% going into grassroots...
Also great examples of how you need truly elite players (which you draft with top 10 picks) in your starting 22 to even compete for, let alone win a flag.
It's not either/or.
It's both
When you lose more than half of your games by single digits- it's wrong to say that a gun draft pick or two isn't the answer.
A petracca/degoey etc type messiah or two (or lack thereof) can most definately be a determining factor in that many close losses
No- the complete opposite infact.
Our GOPs continue to get paid the same GOP wages they are on now.
We literally cash in our spare cap money to the AFL.
And in return we get extra (presumably) first round draft pick(s).
Normally I'd agree with you on that-
yes, it's important not to fully tank or you'll never trade targets (like Henry for instance) or RFA targets.
However the following 2 factors are crucial (and specific to us) I think:
1. We are never going to land the kind of RFA targets we need (eg degoey...
I love this because it is so very true.
Remember when we had plugger kicking bags of goals every week in a team that would be thrashed every week?
Not quite on the same scale here (yet)- but the hero worship over roma's individual stats etc is missing the point of football entirely.
We are in...

This could be huge for us (if we are brave enough to stop playing it safe with list mgt and actually innovate)
The ability to simply buy picks with spare salary cap would be huge for us.
We won't ever get the big fish elite mid(s) we need (eg degoey, kelly...
I feel like bonner would be leading the league for unforced error/turnover directly resulting in a goal.
That would be acceptable if he was a weapon at setting up our goals- but he isn't.
Worst of both worlds- not setting up our goals and directly costing us ones too.
Sincs didn't attend a single centre bounce until q4 last week.
(24% of all centre bounces for the whole game- dow and pou both attended twice as many 48%)
Sincs attended 5 centre bounces last week (in q4) and got 2 centre clearances.
(Dow and Pou attended 10 each for 0, windy attended 16 for...
All signed for multiple years likely on the presumption that we weren't ~3-5 years from now off contending for a flag.
ro, steele, sincs are all 29+ next year- wouldn't be surprised if any/all of them were open to being traded to a contender, regardless of their current contract status.
Might...
Playing in our team- Stengle would only look marginally better as a player than Higgins does.
Put another way- if higgins played for the cats he'd look as good as stengle does.
In summary- pass.
Overpay an elite mid or two to come across and just play higgins and whoever
He only has to look as far as Sinclair to see that playing plenty of VFL can be a good thing for your career.
Contrasted against a guy like billings who (to my recollection) rarely played any.
It's not about where you start- it's all about where you end up as a player.
If he's looking the goods in that kind of role- it makes it an interesting call on whether we give battle a big bucks, long term deal to make him turn down free agent offers.
Might be a gresh type situation, where we are better off taking the FA compo and promoting Arie?
My suggestion is that we already have one of those someone's- jack sinclair as a fulltime centre square mid.
(grab caleb daniel for free draft cost as a salary dump to play HB).
Add a guy like mcluggage, also maybe a macrae (as another salary dump) and suddenly our best 22 look like a top 4...
I reckon it's more like jack billings syndrome.
Perfectionist type who gets in his own head too much trying to be the GOAT from day one.
I reckon he needs a shrink to tell him that if he wants to be the GOAT... he's gotta stop piling pressure on himself and enjoy the ride.
I'm going to go into bat (a little) for our troll mate Lifestyle.
Yes Lifestyle is way off base suggesting we trade any (let alone all) of steele, wilkie, sincs and marshal in for late first rounders.
But..... Lifestyle's overall/general reasoning behind their insane suggestion isn't so...
