I don't mind the concept of the progression from groups into finals, the main concern I have is not enough flexibility or variety in contests throughout the season. Only playing 3 or 4 other sides, 7 or 5 times in a year leaves a bit to be desired. At worst I think we should play every team...

Perhaps we need to do away with the term conferences then, given people's perceptions it has anything to do with the NFL. It is just a name. Call them groups, divisions, pools, whatever... But the AFL needs come up with a system that addresses most of the inequalities the current set-up...

Sounds pretty convincing. How are the "wild card" entries drawn given a team could finish 2nd in a conference on percentage alone, be comfortably better than most other teams in the comp, and miss out on finals? Maybe a top 2 in each conference automatic finals position and then the next...

My reference to equal travel is for teams from the same state regardless of which conference they're in. So that say, FRE doesn't end up travelling to Brisbane and Sydney any more times in a season than the WCE does. How would a Non-Vic / Vic conference system play out? Rounds, rotations...

If you have conferences with only Victorian clubs, and only interstate clubs, the interstate clubs would be travelling upwards of 2000km every 2nd week...

Agreed. The approach has been more measured, which I certainly prefer. I think what I meant to say was, I hope we get a bit more luck with the severity of injuries this season.

Thoughts on the likelihood of Treloar, Howe, and Elliot being right to go for round 1? For the last few seasons, I'm sure we've all become a little tired and skeptical of "short term" injuries "coming along nicely", turning into 6-10 weeks. Really hope this is the year we can get quick...
