    Unpopular AFL Opinions

Clearing up a few errors here in an otherwise good post: (a) WCE played in a GF in 1991 and were formed in 1987 so they did not play in a GF within two years of foundation. (b) Not all West Australian players came back to play for WCE Rioli didn't, Wilson didn't (until later on), Mitchell...

Resource Two 2nd Tier AFL Venues for Perth

Pardon my ignorance, but what do they mean when they say "no perimeter fencing" at East Freo Oval post the redevelopment? Does it mean waist-high fencing around the playing arena or no high wire fencing between the buildings and the footpaths? If the latter, how will they stop people going to...

    Unsolved The Beaumont Children

I was in Glasgow during lockdown and traced the walk of Bible John and Jemima McDonald from the Barrowlands Ballroom on the Gallowgate through to London Road and down to Bridgeton Cross. Her old tenement block behind Bridgeton Cross has been replaced by dreary newer buildings. The red stone...

Expansion Proposals for a Truly National AFL

I enjoy someone who doesn't just think thoughts permitted by the AFL. And I would prefer this thread over another "who is the Big 3 or Big 4?"

    Unsolved The Beaumont Children

Google searches or knowing Big Footy has Crime forums. A lot got attracted by the Claremont Serial Killings forums which were absorbing and hugely popular. I tried to generate interest in Bible John, but it didn't work!

Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon no longer the big 3

1987 to 92? I remember watching the first WCE game versus Richmond in 1987 - Michael Mitchell, Peter Wilson, Maurice Rioli, Dale Weightman, and David Palm were playing - not sure how a team with those five in it were not worth watching. I guess, apart from the first two, they were getting on in...

Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon no longer the big 3

Interesting and perceptive comment there about why Melbourne's support base is not bigger than it is. Not knowing Melbourne suburban structure well, is their geographic area fairly small too? What suburbs would you find Melbourne supporters to be the majority in or at least number one in?

Here is an interesting comparison: How would West Coast fare in size with Glasgow Rangers?

    Weird football scores

Mediocre runs occur in the WAFL too. A good example is West Perth from 1976-86 - not one grand final appearance in that time, but no wooden spoons either and only one seventh placing in 1979.

Of course he is. He just got back from Princes Park. Doully had an outstanding game.

Toast #BringBackTheBars - Our Heritage, Our History, Our Right! Part 2

I think the black stripe down the middle of the front does look better, Swan Districts in the WAFL still keep the jersey that way.

    Weird football scores

Me and a mate Mike B set up a new West Perth cheer squad in Round 6, 1984 for the home game versus South Fremantle. The last game where we existed as a recognized group before we gave up and drifted apart was Round 1, 1986 versus Perth at Lathlain. Both these games were draws.

    The 2nd Division Thread (proposal)

Take MV out and the averages aren't as impressive. Melbourne Croatia v South Melbourne could draw 15,000 back in the day as could Marconi versus Sydney Croatia. There were clubs with small crowds in the NSL and clubs with small crowds in the A-League. Jow are Western United crowds going?

    The 2nd Division Thread (proposal)

Only two Perth clubs attended too - Perth SC and Rockingham City. Some nice ambition shown by Rockingham City.

Expansion Proposals for a Truly National AFL

I agree. I can't stand the draft and refuse to ever read about it or discuss it. Even the word has Vietnam War connotations. And as a Carlton fan, I liked the 1967-85 period, thanks very much. I don't like the 2000-today period.

Just being called "The Dolphins" is ridiculous to me. Almost as ludicrous as the Perth soccer club called "The City" which fortunately changed names after a year.

Expansion Proposals for a Truly National AFL

There are Aussie Rules clubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh (Sharks and Bloods respectively) but they are disappointing. They play 9-a-side. Absolutely nobody knows about them and they are never in the mainstream media. Rugby union is the second biggest football code and it seems that people are happy...

That was what happened in the beginning with Wast Coast but it's an old historical problem now and people have got over it and moved on. And "West Coast can be anywhere". As a resident, let me just say that the West Coast of Scotland doesn't want them!

Nightmarish violence at Dreamtime at the G

Going by Scotland policing of Rangers versus Celtic games, I think the police believe that the best starting times are either Sunday 12 noon (pubs only open at 11am) or something like Sunday 4pm or 6pm when afterwards you have spent all your weekend money and just want to head off home. If you...

Nightmarish violence at Dreamtime at the G

Crowd segregation and no beer for sale at the game might be the way to go (at least for "Big 4" games), following Scottish football. A theory I have heard is that locking people up for two years worsened the mental health of the population which is why you are getting more crowd trouble at...

Apple Isle Showdown: Tas Govt threatens to end Hawks, North deals if no plan for 19th side

Ross County FC, based in Dingwall (population 5,491), are fifth in the Scottish Premiership (i.e. soccer). But I guess soccer is a game where you can buy three strong players and ride up the table fast, especially in Scotland where clubs are small outside the big five clubs.

    Amazing coincidences in football

About West Coast and Gold Coast, it was only the strange idea of a set of marketing gurus to call the club West Coast instead of Perth in 1986 that created your "coincidence". Up until then no-one ever used the phrase West Coast.

Sorry if it has already been mentioned but the disappearance of a whole immigrant family on Christmas Eve in America in the 1940s or 1950s, one theory is that a communist government from Europe disposed of them.

Unsolved Madeleine McCann - New Leads Being Reported

To clarify and add to my earlier post, it was Lucie Blackman who was murdered in Japan in 2000 and her parents had a trust set up I think before the McCann's. The book on the case is called People who eat darkness by Richard Lloyd Parry.

Sorry I copied your post twice by mistake. There might have been a similar fund set up by parents before the McCann's.
