    Running/Fitness HIIT

I do Les Mills GRIT. There are 3 versions, Strength - weights, Cardio - body weight, and Plyo - hand weight and step. It is structured, similar to Pump. But in some ways quite different. The classes make me (and most people) work harder than they otherwise would. Grit makes you work very hard -...

    What I don't understand

Remember Max Rooke? I reckon he wasn't allowed to even sniff the gym. He seemed the type that was naturally strong and powerful. Loved watching him play - everywhere. Just put his body and the line and outmuscled bigger guys regularly. There are just some guys that put on muscle naturally...

    What I don't understand

Compared to Rugby League players (The Raiders used to train at my gym and I'd end up being surrounded by them) the AFL players are much leaner and less muscled. But very different needs in the sports. Anyway. Onto cardio vs muscle building. It's really what you are trying to do. If you want...

    Running/Fitness HIIT

Sorry, what??? The form of training is High Intensity Interval Training. Therefore part of the logic is to have you training at as high an intensity as you can. So one of the things you want to do is to regularly push yourself to your max, such that you have to stop (or fell that you have to...

    Running/Fitness HIIT

Why? The point of HIIT is to work at a very high intensity for short periods, followed by an interval of rest, then repeat. If your intensity is high enough you will 'fail' - i.e. take a short (2 second) rest, then return to the fray. If you never approach 'failure' then are you working at as...

    Running/Fitness HIIT

Apologies for the delayed response. Yep, a big difference between strength and cardio HIIT. I tend to find cardio HIIT more intense, but the muscle soreness doesn't last as long. When I do strength I lean towards more strength than number of reps. So sometimes it's very hard to push the weights...

    Running/Fitness HIIT

Good citations Note the statement. "Our analysis also indicated that only computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging showed significant abdominal and/or visceral fat-mass loss after HIIT interventions." But I suspect the usual weight loss issues come into play 90% food, 10% other...

    Running/Fitness HIIT

Just a couple of comments form my own experience. HIIT is great, but is hard to do right and isn't the way to long term weight loss, or muscle growth. What I've learnt of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is through reading and doing Les Mills HIIT classes (Grit and Sprint) and talking to...

Gym & Misc Anyone into yoga?

Sounds good. Yoga is often used like it means something in particular. But in reality every instructor does it differently. Sometimes it's virtually a different thing. which is a god thing.

Gym & Misc Anyone into yoga?

What you get from yoga relies a lot on the instructor. Some just get you to wave your hands around, some are ethereal, and some a grounded. Possibly the most hurting (spelling) class I do is a yoga class that is like power yoga. Amazing! But other classes I have done are sort of relaxing, but...

    Yoga

If your gym has Body Balance it's a really good stretching program as well. I've found it helps me feel less tired and tight, and it just sets you up after a hard week. Basically anything where people know how to stretch safely. Stretching with poor form is an easy way to blow your knees/back.

    Gym & Misc Boot Camp

I don't quite understand bootcamps. PT is OK, if the PT is actually knowledgeable. Some are full of *%it. Having someone shout at me when I'm exercising makes me not want to come. However if you need to motivation, then good on you for paying someone to motivate you. (seriously, not taking the...

    Gym & Misc Les Mills

The Les Mills classes are great fun, very well structured and good for you - especially for cardio fitness and core strength. But if you want muscle mass then you'll not get it that way. To a certain extent muscle mass and cardio are opposed. AFL players have to work very hard to be faily...

    Shoulders

Just found the thread. I'm no expert, but I've had should problems (right shoulder) for ages. At the gym they just gave me different exercises every time I got my program done up - every 2 months or so. After a while my shoulders got so much better. I think it was more that varied exercises...

Few Questions About Gym And Healthy Eating.

Freddy, not pretending to be an expert. But - what you want to do (in simple terms) is increase your exercise regime, especially lifting weights, and to eat more healthily. That is easy to say, harder to do. I would not try and make it up yourself. Read stuff by experts on what you are trying...

    Question about toning/muscle...

I'm no guru, but I've done a fair bit of exercise over the last three decades and I think that you (Vonn) should get an expert to run through a program with you. The thing is you can do what you want many different ways. And if you are even close to fit you will achieve your goals fairly easily...
