Resource 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order – NOW UP TO DATE (but not live)

There's at least one (understandable) error on that, GWS traded us Adelaide's 2nd rounder, not their own Source: https://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/1467456/draft-night-one-wrap

    Pick 4 on the table?

Yup, traded a future mid first (wound up being 15 - was ontraded in the Cameron deal) for pick 27. The endlessly baffling element of that trade was why it wasn't done earlier. Were Brisbane, Port, Adelaide and Sydney all not answering their phones on the second night?
  3. goodie23

    Pick 4 on the table?

Absolutely absurd that it hasn't been fixed after Ugle-Hagan (pick 1 paid for with 29, 33, 41, 42, 52 and 54) Sam Darcy (pick 2 paid for with 34, 42, 43, 44 and 45) and Daicos (pick 4 matched with 38, 40, 42 and 44). First pick in any bid match should be in the same round or within 10 picks.

    Pick 4 on the table?

Reckon Melbourne will have a strong look, either to keep for themselves or to leverage their way up to pick 1. They've got 5, 15, 24, 34 and whatever they get for Grundy to play with.

    Review Grade your team’s draft

That's just proof that the points weighting is rubbish.

Analysis What are your clubs biggest positional needs at the draft?

Class with our first pick, at least 2 195cm+ KPP's (up forward we have King, down back we have Doogs, then height at both ends falls off a cliff)

Opinion Confess - Who did you want in the first round in previous drafts?

2022 - Tsatas to slide, failing that McKenzie 2021 - Erasmus, Johnson or Wanganeed-Milera 2020 - Bowey maybe, last pick of a marathon first round (pick 26!) so whoever slid 2019 - N/A traded out 2018 - Max King of course 2017 - Brayshaw and/or Cerra to slide 2016 - N/A traded out 2015 - Hipwood...

Strategy Why take Will Ashcroft with the first pick?

Clubs pay for matched bid picks with swathes of 2nd, 3rd round picks, the earlier they have to match a bid, the more points they have to pay, the more picks are required and the more the drafting position of every other club is improved.

    Opinion The bidding system

    Dumb luck and dodgy zoning.

Prediction Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) – who should get picked up?

They might, but then with the SSP you can get a player in, see how they train and bond with the squad and skip the risk of someone else drafting them.

Prediction Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) – who should get picked up?

Already one article: https://www.afl.com.au/news/528890/nine-clubs-14-spots-who-will-get-an-afl-lifeline-for-2021- Official list of delistees: https://www.afl.com.au/news/retirements-and-delistings In short: Nine clubs, 14 spots currently. Saints have 3. Melbourne, Richmond, Collingwood have...

Prediction Likely trades from your team this off season

Played round 1, then was one of three players to get dropped for round 2. Tore a pectoral muscle in a practice match 2 weeks later that required surgery. That ruled him out for the majority of the season, been playing in the scratch matches for the last month. Was considered for selection...

Strategy What is your teams ideal draft and trade period in 2020?

We haven't got a massive amount of currency so probably keep it fairly simple 1. Sign a free agent to bolster the midfield (we've had good luck with ex-Giants so Zac Willliams, back-ups Viney or Crouch) 2. Move on a role player to get us a pick in this year's draft - maybe shift Luke Dunstan...

Strategy Pick trading pre-draft and mid-draft

Apparently we're following the American model of being 'on the clock'. "HOW DOES LIVE TRADING WORK IN THE AFL DRAFT Now the rules have changed so trades involving draft picks only can continue right up to the draft in November — including during the event itself. It means a club with a late...

Strategy Pick trading pre-draft and mid-draft

You do remember that the Hawks received that pick from Fremantle? Also the small matter that pick-for-pick trading didn't exist then.

Confess - What players did you want your club to draft?

2013 - Hoped Kelly (GWS, pick 2, Saints took Billings at 3) would slip through, then pick up Dunstan (who we got at 18) and Dumont (North, pick 30, Saints took Acres at 19) late in the first round 2014 - I liked 2 Metre Peter (GC, pick 7), then when the field was down to two thought we'd take...

    Billy Hartung

They might, if a club doesn't like the look of what's left at the tail end of the draft they could pick him up. Not likely but not impossible.

What types will your club be looking for in the draft

Which player do you realistically want with your teams first selection in the draft?

Hoping the cards fall the right way and Cerra slides to us.
  22. goodie23

    Blaine Boekhorst - oooops

They completely misread the draft and prioritised pace above all other attributes. After picking up Jaksch and Jones, they wanted midfielders and so Boekhorst was fourth(!) on their preferences list for the whole draft. According to The Draftees: The club would have chosen only Angus Brayshaw...

Category B rookies at your club

More to do with the deal the AFL cut with the GAA, only one Irishman allowed on the category B list

    2016 AFL Draft Thread

The three day turnaround is a dumb idea. Either go back to the old system weeks later which allows clubs to invite blokes out to train with them or do it on the same night.

    2 Father/Son questions..

Must be different rules for father-sons, which was the original question. Or the rules have changed since last year as part of the shift about using bunches of late picks.

    2 Father/Son questions..

    2. You are obligated to take them with your last pick of the national draft if you nominate them for it. If they get through the national draft without being picked, you can nominate them for the rookie draft and get them automatically with your last pick in it. So if you figure a bloke's more...

    2016 trade hypotheticals

Problem with statements like this is Carlton have picks 5 and 23 and next year's pick won't be in that range either.
