Do they still do Eurail passes? I got one of those, you got 15 trips over two months. You could also travel at night and save on paying for accomodation. It was a good way of doing it.

I enjoyed the World Cup cricket in England in 99, saw a couple of the preliminary matches and then lucked into tickets for the semi final and the final. Good times.
I spent most of my 20's on the road, lived on 3 continents and generally behaved like the man without a care in the world that I was. Unless you have any unbreakable ties in your hometown man, do it. It's not that difficult to do and if you get it right it will all happen organically for you.
