Tom Morris said each team would play in two gather rounds. That is not possible.
I just returned from GR and the whole thing was a little flat. I reckon rotation is the answer, not expansion.
Ill informed post by the journo. Showring’s capacity will be nominal (3k - 4K), Easter is Lions Thurs. Good Friday game and Easter Hawks v Cats. And the NRL has Homebush all sewn up over Easter. If Gather Rnd moves to Sydney it will stay the middle week of school holidays. Plus. You cannot...
When BT was roving in the Pies rooms after the game I was shocked by how small they were, the tall players were literally having to duck to not hit their head on pipes, etc.
You could add another 3k to 5k and tart up Suncorp without too much structural work. It wouldn’t be worth rebuilding stand a the roof to add another 10k.
That, and a 55k stadium at Vic Park is my prediction. Keep costs down.
That was 35 years ago! Pretty sure the MCG paid most of it. They have taken government loans to fund new stands.
For the two new stands done in 2004 & 2006, MCC borrowed more the whole amount. The government wiped a $90m debt from the GSS At the same time. As part of the contract the AFL...
Not quite. The Western Stand, which was redeveloped in 2010, kept the facade and brickwork from the three original stands - one dates back to 1882. This was done before agreement was made to build new southern and eastern stands and move the footy back there. And the hill remains, so about 60%...
That would cost more than doing it all at once.
Right now it seems to be all about reducing costs. Perhaps the middle ground is leaving the southeast side of the stadiums as is (can even keep the school), and rebuild the north-east 40%/45% of the stadium in two stages:
Stage 1 - demolish and...
The current capacity is 37k. You will lose 1k - 2k minimum extra media space the Olympics requires. If no stands are rebuilt, is 35k sufficient for an Olympic Games?
The budget Olympics would have the opening ceremony at Suncorp, and the athletics at Metricon with 40k (temp stand back up). I...
They would only have to cut into 5 - 10 rows up one end behind the goals to fit a track. They did this with the Southern Stand @ MCG. The western stand is the oldest (1993) so perhaps that one gets rebuilt to allow for the track. Not sure how they would be able to increase capacity though...
So, the only way to reduce costs and still rebuild the Gabba might be to lower the capacity?
Current plan is for 50k @ Olympics which will increase to 53k - 55k once you remove some media space and include standing room. What if it were reduced to 40k (then 43k) and was redesigned in a way that...
Given that the east side of the ground (40%ish of capacity) is only 20 years old, why couldn’t the other 60% of the stadium could not be rebuilt? it could be done in two stage so no games need to be moved. This is what they do at the MCG, rebuild half the stadium every 40 years. Is there a...
No need to panic Lions fans. And don’t be too concerned with the financials. Brisbane is the AFL’s second highest priority club after Sydney. The AFL will cover any deficit, long term they would bail you out if things go totally pear shaped.
Surely the priority is for as many Lion fans/members...
Nah. Do a deal with the SUNS. You play your home Q clash at Metricon for those four years, the they play their home Q clash a the new Gabba for a few years.
Nice looking historic stand but you would hate to get a seat behind one of the 24 posts holding the roof up.
I read EKKA happy to contribute $15m, so just $76m to go.
If the AFL or Lions didn’t have a contract in place regarding the Gabba, then they can take some blame for this mess. If the had one, then the QLD govt would need to compensate the Lions for breaching their obligations with Gabba being unavailable for four years. As happened with the Roosters...
The QLD government is not likely to spend $50m+ upgrading RSA (or a single cent on MVO) if you are going to sell games interstate. This talk is all positioning for a better Reno @ RSA. It will be 44 home games in Queensland for sure. As it should be.
Anyway even 50k @ MCG when half are MCC or...
You might be right. Surely the answer to potentially ‘locking out 40k members’ is not to lock out ALL of your members by playing interstate, regardless of the loss of home ground advantage. This makes no sense.
Sole wipe numbers being thrown around. Your average crowds were 32k in a GF season...
Two take outs from this week’s media:
they are aiming to have the new Gabba ready for the Ashes test in Dec 29. So four full seasons elsewhere.
Summer of 26/27 is a four test series so Queensland will miss out. I think 27/28 is also a four test series, so it may only be one test match in 28/29...
Nah. MCG and Marvel (in the middle of a makeover) are on a par (at least) with any stadium in Australia besides Optus and probably Allianz (have not been there yet). AO‘s amenities are nothing special, but they have been able to retain some history, and, due to its smallish capacity, the...
