I'm not saying make an example of him (I would have asked for 14-18 weeks), I'm saying if the AFL really want to stop these kinds of hits to the head, then they need to start punishing the offenders with longer suspensions, and the sooner they start the better. And watching the replays this is...
If he only gets four weeks then you can see similar incidents happening again this year, as it's not a super severe punishment, but if he gets 8 weeks then maybe players will think twice about going the bump.
It occurs more often than you think. Occasionally you will see a ball carrier chased down from behind after making a break, but most wouldn't be too dissimilar to this one, where the ball carrier has managed to step through the defensive line and looks to be in the clear only for the tackler...
Looked like a textbook Rugby league tackle to me, the difference is Rugby League players know how the brace themselves when being tackled, and looking at the footage Blakey doesn't.
I hope St Kilda challenge and I hope Butler gets off.
Wasn't his finest moment. The fact that Young bounced up straight away suggests to me (that his spine has been replaced with something soft and bouncy like rubber :D) that there was no damage and therefore no weeks. Probably just a fine.
In the 45+ years I've been watching the footy, I've never seen anyone trying to spoil by turning their back. He may have originally thought to spoil, but by turning 180 degrees it looked more like a late bump in the end.
I want consistency.
Cunnington gets a week for a bump where he didn't leave the ground, there was no obvious hit to the head and the player got up almost immediately. We took it to the tribunal and got it reduced.
Duncan jumped, turned his back, struck the head of the player who will miss a...
So what. He “accidentally” hit an opponent in the head who will now miss a game due to concussion. In this day and age there needs to be some kind of penalty, irrespective of intent.
If it was a North player who hit late, he would have been reported. Geelong would have got a free kick down the ground as well.
Deserves a week or two, but won't even get looked at.
It looked like he tucked his arm and shoulder in and went the bump. Unfortunately he hit Shiel in the jaw and with two strikes already should probably get at least one week.
I'm hoping a minimum of 4 weeks. It will relieve Brad of any temptation to bring him back into the team until after the bye. And hopefully by then Brad will be wise enough to see the our forward line performs better without him.
As for Waite, I agree with Chris Scott on this one, Lynch picked...
Not everyone at North was amateurish, Goldstein kept playing and punch the ball towards the boundary line.
As for the umpires performances, I had no issues with them or any of the calls or non calls until the final 10 minutes. Up until then I hadn't really noticed the umpires too much, but...
