What shits me is how there are different interpretations depending on the time of the game, and the location. The same things that earn a free in the first 10 minutes, or in the centre of the ground, suddenly don't when there's 2 minutes left, or when the ball is 15m out from goal.
It'd be pretty hard to umpire (like pretty much every other rule these days) but i'd make carrying the ball over the boundary line considered deliberate. It shits me seeing blokes about to get tackled on the boundary so they just ride the tackle over the line without trying to get rid of the...
Pretty soft decision imo. Watching it in real time i thought it was worth a free but nothing more. Was a bit shocked to hear he got a game for it, and even more so when i heard it was actually worth 2, down to 1.
It was a bit reckless for sure, but it wasn't malicious. Surely a reprimand...
Shouldn't be penalised, but shouldn't be rewarded either. It was umpired very well in the Crows/Cats game on the weekend, a lot of players grabbed the ball, and then continued to run head down into the opposition to draw the free kick, most of which weren't forthcoming. Watching other games...
I read in the Advertiser the other day that the interpretation has changed. If you're tackled with NO prior opportunity, you still have to make what the umpires deem to be a "genuine attempt" to get the ball out. If not they'll ping you.
"Genuine attempt" was a buzzword with the maggots last...
The thing i hate about it is that (like many other rules) it gets paid exponentially more near the end of a quarter/game.
If you're going to crack down on it big time, you have to do it all day. Not just in the frantic final minutes.
Yep spot on, i've noticed that too. I was very happy when that rule was in and being enforced correctly, however like has been said, it's gradually going back to how it used to be. I do agree though that if a player runs over the mark, the opposition has every right to grab him and push him back...
My biggest gripe with the Holding the Ball rule is that push in the back takes precedence over it. If a bloke runs 50m, and takes 3 bounces and gets run down from behind, that should always be holding the ball. The crowd rises for stuff like that and when you reverse it for a push in the back...
The 50m penalty against Tambling in Rd 1. Free gets paid against the Crows, umpire points the wrong way (like it was a Crows free), so Tambling plays on and kicks forward. This results in the umpire paying a 50m against him because he was too weak to admit his mistake. Directly results in a...
I don't think there is a set rule. Much like so many other rules in this game of ours, it is entirely up to the maggot's personal interpretation. The time allowed also seems to change depending on how far through the quarter/game it is. A mark in the back pocket in the middle of Q1 will allow...
