I'm trying to imagine this situation happening with the roles reversed and I just cannot do it. I can't imagine Demetriou rushing to say Mildura because rugby league is trying to create a presence there. Makes Gallup look small and insignificant.
I thought he had a really good first quarter against the Dogs but seemed to struggle after hitting his head at the end of the first quarter.
He's showing signs right now. A good 10 minutes, a solid quarter, a great mark etc that suggest to me that he will eventually become a good contributor...
Was really impressed with your boys last night. Thought they were every bit as good as GC was this time last year.
You guys definitely have some impressive young players and they showed a lot of heart. Obviously it'll be a tough season for GWS but I think they'll perform a lot better than a...
Depends on who GWS think they'll sign at the end of 2012. If they are pretty sure they'll land a Pendlebury or Deledio then you'd think they'd want him to be captain when he arrives.
For that reason, I think they are likely to make Power captain in 2012 and then when he retires at the end of...
Yes, lets compare a guy learning the game to a Coleman Medalist. Makes total sense.
By any and all measures, Folau acquitted himself very well in NEAFL. His preparations for the AFL have been pretty good and to be honest he's probably ahead of where I thought he'd be - particularly after his...
Re: 2012 Membership - 3,613 [at 4/1]
I'm a bit disappointed with the number so far. Hopefully it merely indicates that they have been slow processing the memberships. Given the number of foundation members - which compare fairly favourably with GC - I would've expected membership to be almost...
That's a pretty disparate group you've got there. Carey played four games in his first season for no goals, while someone like Lloyd and Lockett had just turned 17. Both Dunstall and Sumich were relatively mature when they debuted. So I'm not sure how valid this comparison is.
I think you make a good point. GWS are going to be low scores for most of the season. To put this in perspective, GC's leading goalscorer was Danny Stanley with 20. If Folau was to score 20 goals that would be a great effort.
Better to compare foundation members between the two clubs. As I understand it, GWS total compares favourably with GCs. 12k seems like a very strong number at this stage.
Ex-pats and interstate fans will make it very hard for them to average less than 10k. There's always a tonne of opposition supporters and neutrals at Swans games and it'll be the same with GWS.
They'll beat 10k simply because fans travel in the AFL and there's a significant population of ex-pat Victorians who will go along because they need their footy fix. Neutrals will ensure healthy crowds initially regardless of what support the Giants have. I have, for example, been to seven Swans...
NRL crowds are objectively terrible. With the exception of the Broncos, teams genuinely struggle to get people through the gate. It is perhaps the greatest issue the game faces. Regardless of whether GiantForce went about it the right way, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with pointing this...
QFT.
This is not a place where you'll find a great deal of casual footy fans. You have to put in the effort to not only find this place, but also register. So this isn't a great place to use to determine how many fans a club has.
I'm sure the 10k members do include a lot of ex-pats but there...
I'm confused. You don't want the AFL antagonising the NRL but you're annoyed that they are not trying to tap into NRL fans? Besides the Folau situation the AFL has gone out of its way to avoid antagonising NRL fans by directly targeting non-supporters. You'd prefer the AFL to directly target the...
The 'war' is effectively a Daily Telegraph creation. There will always be overzealous fans on both sides of the fence but the vast of Australian football fans would have nothing against rugby league. Why would they? As for the AFL themselves, they want to grow but so does every other league in...
Exactly. If you're paying him over a million then he should be captain.
The only reason they'd go for someone else is if they think they can get someone like Pendlebury at the end of 2012. In which case you might give the captaincy to an older player who can hand it off.
In fact the choice of...
Griffin has become too valuable for you guys to lose. Sandilands is getting older and 7 footers and ankle / knee issues are fairly common. You'll need a quality second ruckman and Griffin is beginning to look like a gem.
I've been thinking lately that Didak could be useful trade-bait. His loss wouldn't hurt Collingwood that much and could be used to grab quality youth that could extend your premiership window.
It's a negotiation. Of course GWS will aim high, they should. More than likely end up with either mid-tier young talent or higher end older talent. Teams will offer quite a bit for these picks, the chance to get a great player without bottoming out is too good an opportunity.
Yeah I don't think the logic follows either. You're basically trade a very good player, for a player who probably won't be as good as him in 2013. These picks are surely designed to get GWS players who can deliver now, players who will be better than the likes of O'Meara in 2013, 2014 and 2015...
Please tell Alan Toovey and Jordan Lewis that they are soft, that the game they play lacks physicality. Stop being ignorant.
Most Rugby League collisions occur at half speed from opponents that you can see and prepare for. The speed of the hit is every bit as important as the size of the...
