The ICC determines cricket playing conditions. Tasmania are never going to get a test down there more than once every 3-4 years anyway so you aren’t constructing a stadium with test match cricket in mind
Absolutely fantastic that Tassie finally will get a team, it’s long overdue. I’m not of the opinion though that they need to be a success straight away. If it takes a few wooden spoons and 10 years to make finals then so be it. Tasmanians will embrace the team regardless
I do wonder if this would still be the case. I honestly don’t know how many of our fans went over to the Crows but I remember at the time a lot didn’t as the Crows were seen as just Cornes and all his Glenelg mates. Most Norwood supporters despised Glenelg as much as Port ( who Norwood at least...
Eastern suburbs.
I’m not sure if we would draw similar crowds to Port or not but even though we have only a few thousand lifelong members like myself that attend most weeks we do have a fair bit of support hidden in the community and they come out in good numbers for Grand Finals.
I do think a...
I’m in Adelaide and love travelling to Tassie so would definitely go down and make a week of it whereas I’m probably not going to attend yet another game at Marvel. I’m assuming North has a say in who they play in Hobart?
Their home game against us is usually one of their biggest crowds so I...
My Grandfather and father were involved with Norwood during the that era and my father used to reckon WT had a very sizeable supporter base and on par if not bigger than Sturt and North. Glenelg had fairly low support back then
The Crows had been put together in 1990 and announced to enter in 1991 and once that happened the writing was on the wall. The WT/Woodville merger took place in 1990 also. Without the merger I doubt either would have survived.
All SANFL clubs have been decimated of support since the AFL invasion
As I explained above it was fairly painless because from the WT perspective they were as good as dead anyway. They were in a old residential area with no real growth margin and they were technically insolvent so were about to be wound up anyway. Woodville had no real support as they were are new...
Did see some WT guernseys in the crowd early days and the odd Woodville guernsey but that was understandable as WT had all the history and a small but diehard support group. You have to remember that pre merger WT hadn’t won a flag in 40 years and had little to no finals success and Woodville...
This was probably one of the most painless mergers ever. WT had all the history and were broke, doubt they would have survived another 5 years. Woodville were a nothing club with no history and a fairly young club, they were ok financially though. Being immediate neighbours it just made good...
They definitely need priority access at their first draft. I just don’t get this obsession the AFL has with getting new teams up to standard ASAP and gifting them all the talent. Who cares if it takes 10,20 or 30 years for them to play finals
I definitely want a stand alone Tasmanian team and 19 teams could absolutely work. I just hope that there is a better way of setting up a initial squad rather than compromising the draft as much as it was for GWS and the Suns.
If the new team is rubbish for 10 or 20 years that’s just bad luck
Carlton tried a takeover, hardly a merger 😝
Hawthorn has been an amazing club and has gone several decades without sustained periods of garbage so of course the fan base has grown. Try being rubbish for 20 years and see how the membership base holds up
I guess we will see in a few years, your crapness has only been a couple of years. If the Hawks had to endure lean a lean patch like us or Carlton they would have 10,000 members.
