My son played in the half-time Auskick at half time of the VFL GF in 2000. Given that he went down the 'struggling muso' route rather than the 'non-athlete embarassing himself on the field' path that his old man did, it's likely to remain the sporting highlight of his life.
Looks gorgeous, but the surface on Friday night was pretty poor (lots of slipping), and whoever provided the paint for the logo needs a rocket. That was a terrible look.
I'm tempted to say Docklands for all the reasons already mentioned here - but maybe I only started going to Docklands when I had become officially a Grumpy Old Man - and it wasn't like 'Football in my day!'.
Princes Park just seemed a bit lifeless to me.
To summarise while all these problems arose.
The stadium was designed for 150-160,000 capacity. Double level all around. Build that, and you cut out much of the wind, the top deck gets a roof etc - much more comfortable. Remember, when it was designed, no one thought about big TVs, live game...
The 'Orange and Black' dot matrix was actually more sepia than orange. And it did show replays (well, it said it did, but f***ed if I could ever make out what they were actually showing). It was a good idea, terribly executed.
The surface at Waverley went through a few stages - at one stage...
Sydney's main problem is the harbour. Now that was fantastic in 1788, when you were planning a settlement for a few thousand people, and the height of transport was a boat or a horse and cart, but it just doesn't work for cars. Add to that, there never was any serious planning for public...
That's Sydney. For the Olympics, instead of just giving the building contracts to Multiplex and co, the Games Organisers set up an overseeing company to 'manage' the construction projects. They did 2 things:
1. Pocketed a fat 3rd-party 'management' fee.
2. Gave the contracts to Multiplex and...
I remember reading somewhere back in the late 60s-mid 70s when they were getting 110,000+, the split was about 60K seating and over 50K standing.
There was a huge standing area directly behind the goals at the Ponsford stand end. Probably could hold 5-10K on its own. During the 80s, at the...
Sebring Raceway in Florida has been in existence for decades and is part of the Sebring airport - still commercially operating. The racetrack crosses the runways a few times. They run 24-hour races there, and many drivers have 'got lost' due to being unable to see exactly what is racetrack and...
I've read Mick Foley's book on wrestling. When starting out in the 'lower leagues' it's perfectly possible to be asked to wrestle in church halls, parks, racecourses etc. Whatever the 'centre' is of small country town you are in. His favorite place he wrestled was a bar.
AC/DC fans didn't like it.
If I remember, the support act was The Angels. Wonder how many people got dragged out of the Bot Gardens the next morning.........................
Still more fun than Carols by Candlelight, though.
I just don't like indoor football. I've been to the rugby a Etihad as well a few times, and it doesn't feel right (yes, I'm an old man). Although it's a much smaller stadium, somehow you feel further from the action than at the MCG. It's something to do with the closed roof. Somehow I find...
Ours was the toughest!!!!
Seriously, it's one of the great things about football in Australia (AFL & NRL) - sure,we joke with opposing fans, but we've never had to segregate them at the ground, the police who have the duty at the match treat it like a free day at the footy, because all they...
1. Even up the draw (divisions, conferences, 17 games, 34 games - whatever).
2. Highest-ranked side from the H&A that makes the GF gets home state advantage.
It's pretty poor when we talk about having a fair competition, equalisation drafts, salary caps etc (see point 1 above) - trying to give...
Hmmm. Maybe you're right, and should have kept it like that.
1964 - Melbourne win Flag. 6th in 10 years. 12th in 68 years.
1965 - Melbourne begin sharing MCG with Richmond (who are suffering a 17-year finals drought).
1965-1980 - Richmond win 5 flags.
1965-1986 - Melbourne suffer...
Hawthorn went to Optus Oval in 1974 (Glenferrie was a dump - quaint, romantic, but still a dump). At that stage VFL Park (Waverley) was almost the No 1 stadium in the State. Every team played there on a rotating basis - you didn't know which team would play there. It was very often the match...
Well, as one of the resident Aths nuts on these boards - this is how I see it.
Any fight between Athletics Victoria (or Athletics Australia( and Collingwood - Collingwood wins. Collingwood (or any other AFL club) could buy the entire Athletics competition in Australia from the proceeds of a...
Olympic Park was where the Storm played for a few years before AAMI (not sure about Victory, but probably. It was the main Victorian soccer ground before AAMI). It was originally built in the 1920s I think, and then majorly upgraded for the 56 Olympics. (It was thr warm-up/training venue). It...
I don't object at all to what they have done to Lakeside. They've maintained the historical facades of the stands, and the facility is a terrific soccer stadium. It's a good position (half-hour walk from Southbank).
It's just unfortunate that Aths was looking for a new home at the same time...
Oh well, the argument about Waverley vs Docklands will go on for eternity - even after both stadiums are gone.
One thing you have to admit the AFL got right (finally). They knew Waverley (or any stadium) had to have public transport to work. The first time they built a ground (Waverley), they...
Junction Oval has such a magnificent surface that they used to play Country Week tennis on it - just mark the lines, string up a net and play.
I had a mate who was a Lions supporter in the '70s so we went to a few games. Funny, although we were good then and Fitzroy were weak, I seem to...
I would have loved to go to the Maracana when it's capacity was 200,000. I can't comprehend a crowd TWICE as big as a packed MCG. Particular if Brazil were playing and the crowd was 100% behind one side. Sadly Elf & Safety have intervened and it's now restricted to about 90,000.
Other than...
Now that we have Skoda stadium, Paterson's Stadium (who are they?) etc, and the AFL have proved that they will take money from anybody, I was wondering what would be the worst possible Stadium sponsorship?
Ignoring the obvious 'Erection problems' and 'Female Hygene Products' lines as too easy...
Because the AFL make more money out of a 50,000-seat, 10,000 corporates boutique stadium, than from a general admission 70,000 seat stadium.
Always remember: if ever you ask 'Why, AFL?', the answer is usually 'Dollars, sucker!'.
