I reckon this is what's going to improve the quality of the AFLW over the next fifteen-years odd - enough exposure for women's games to make girls realistically consider footy as an option, and of course just more teams to play.
Exactly - try going to the soccer over in Europe, and you'll see just how ridiculously male-dominated the spectators are. In the AFL, it's not quite 50-50 (at least so I read), but it's close - so it makes absolute sense that girls growing up on a diet of footy would love to play if it's...
I'm not so big on paying for games until the competition reaches its capacity for teams - I think that the fact that it's free does introduce the "why not?" factor for a lot of people, and has been a big factor in keeping attendances up across the first season. It's also meant that a lot of...
No, we *do* get it. You're inventing a scenario that effectively hasn't occurred and isn't realistic - someone who hasn't undergone hormone therapy or surgery, wanting to compete in a female competition. Trans people want to be called by their preferred gender and pronouns, but they're not...
I think you're making a bit of a straw man out of it. Trans and intersex athletes will challenge the binary of gender-divided competition, that's fine, you work your way through it much like Caster Semenya is now.
I would absolutely love to see a Darwin & Tiwi Islands team. It'd also be fantastic for getting advertisers on board, IMO, because there's no men's team to fill the airwaves in a footy-mad state.
As in they won't want to play for fear of being labelled lesbians? I'm pretty sure that already happens anyway, to be honest. And on the plus side, it's great to have a platform where we're publicly celebrating achievements women who happen to be same-sex attracted.
However, it hasn't had an...
Yeah, exactly. I think if they were to start the AFL all over again they'd probably cap it at fourteen. There's only so many teams because of the old VFL.
Of course the standard isn't great, but the standard isn't the point. The reason why people are going to AFLW is because they want to be a part of it - that (especially for girls and young women) it's inspiring and aspirational for them.
With professionalism, the standard will certainly come...
If your interest was piqued by Saturday night's game and the publicity surrounding the Women's League, you might like to check this out.
ABC did an Australian Story biography piece (http://www.abc.net.au/austory/content/2016/s4525813.htm) a week ago on Moanna Hope and Susan Alberti, and the...
We go on about the standard of the women's game a lot here, but to be honest the reason for having a women's league isn't primarily to provide a high-standard spectacle - primarily, it is, to have a league for women.
How fantastic must it be for young girls who love sport, to be able to dream...
