EDIT: Randall Stevens has pointed out that I didn't take into account Salmon only kicking a couple in the '90 GF so I've fixed the below table, but will leave the text for my shame.
Would you believe that Hawthorn ruckman of the century Paul Salmon averaged more goals in Grand Finals than...
'99 Essendon didn't have Hird, Lucas and Jason Johnson due to injury. Added Barnes. Massive injection of talent between seasons.
'01 Essendon was running on fumes. Hird played the GF with a torn groin, Fletcher on a leg fracture, Barnes couldn't kick on his favoured side due a heel injury...
My dad would sneak a listen to the radio in the other room but his hearing wasn't great so I'd end up hearing the score and getting annoyed. Good times.
This is a good one. I thought he was the best traditional full back of the era because it seemed he was more often left exposed to one v ones due to WC's style and still delivered. Scarlett, Rutten and Rance (though he was a bit later) had a lot more help.
Others that come to mind:
Tredrea was...
Great to see he's getting the recognition he deserves. Have always loved him but he's stepped it up a notch this season.
On his disposal, his long kicking has always been very good and his goal kicking is extremely reliable. He definitely does hurt teams.
His only worry was that he'd...
Has a lot of talent but hasn't quite put it together consistently yet. Hope we persist with him because he could he could have a bit of a break out 2012.
Ken Judge came to my high school to motivate those of us in the cross country team before the big interschool race.
It's a minor miracle we all finished.
Sheedy spoke to us too one day but I was a bit disappointed. Felt like he was trying too hard to be clever and mysterious.
Judd and Murphy and their ability to break away from stoppages could really hurt us.
As could Betts and Gartlett up forward.
Those are our biggest weaknesses and carlton are as equipped as anyone to exploit them, but we should have the advantage with talls which could turn it in our favour...
Yeah that and the sub rule has certainly given additional incentive to take out an opposition player so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a few extra corkies and concussions in knock out finals.
1. Black - hard, skillful, super consistent and big game player. His first half in the '03 grand final was one I won't forget.
2. Rob Harvey - not sure if he hurt teams enough with his disposal, but bloody great player who could not be tagged
3. Cousins - his peak was cut short for obvious...
It's a bit a strange but I would not write him off. Teams still haven't adjusted to the way the saints are playing and when they do he'll probably have less attention and chop up again. Too good to be this quiet for too long.
Definately a champion. I thought he was good in the first GF this year, struggled to have an impact in the 2nd but his job was made pretty difficult by the lack of supply.
I don't see how him not playing his best in grand finals makes him look bad comparing to Carey and Brown. Carey was never...
I think they have another year to have a crack. It's hard to see them getting better without changes but I don't see them getting worse. The hardest thing will be getting up mentally after this.
