Housing Market: Post interest rate rise.

Just wonmdering how the rental market will pan out. I'm re-entering the rental market (via agents) after a few years' absence, and notice prices have dropped since 2 years ago, and are roughly at where they were 5-7 years ago. Wonder if a rate rise will deter potential renters or deter...

Highest money won on any kind of races

Grand Final day got me over $300 for pretty minimal outlay. Josh Carr $1 for first goal at 32-1. Byron Pickett $6 for the Norm Smith at about 40-1. Also had some money on Port for the flag earlier in the season, but can't remember the odds or exact stake. I was down to my last few bucks in...

How much money do you have?

$35 in my Sportingbet account, and $18 in the Betfair one (pending the result of Newcastle vs Man City tonight). The bank accounts aren't even worth mentioning...

    Don't use e-tax

Never had any problems with it, both doing my own & other people's returns. Uusally when doing other people's I give a rough estimate and the e-tax final sum is pretty close. No nasty surprises at all.

Which Financial Institution is the best to join if you are....

PS - Some banks offer savings-based accounts. I think ANZ and Westpac have in the past, don't know if they still do. These accounts charge account fees if you fall below a certain balance, and pay you additional interest if you make a deposit but no withdrawals during a calendar month BUT...

Which Financial Institution is the best to join if you are....

Probably ING. No fees, no minimum balances, 5% interest (may be more now). No branches or ATM cards though, so it has to be linked to an existing account for you to access cash. Otherwise, I'd suggest a VISA or Mastercard debit account, which gives you credit card facilities (no...

    VCE Economics

I did actually finish the exam before the half hour was up... that was the point I was trying to make. I was a bit of an idiot in Yr 12, and study was not a priority - I'd answered every question as best I could because I had not studied for it. Should have been a very easy exam for anyone...

    VCE Economics

I did it quite a while ago (Yr 12, 1992) and even then it seemed to be covering old ground, but perhaps covering it in more detail. The exam was so easy I walked out after the minimum half hour and got a B+ (second highest score in the school). I think you've either got the nous for...

    Property values Inner City Melbourne

Re: Re: Re: Property values Inner City Melbourne It's so different from Footscray central, it's not funny! Yarraville is mostly professionals with growing families, and a few old wogs that have been here since the 1950s. You don't get the streets with 20 consecutive blocks of scum...

    Property values Inner City Melbourne

If you're willing to look out west, a relative bargain can still be found. Personally, distance means nothing to me, so I wouldn't pay huge extra dollars for living 10-15 minutes closer, but if it's your priority then so be it. I'm in Yarraville. 3 minute walk to the train station, 15...

    Tax time

How do elect the option of having an extra sum taken out? I thought it was a choice between the taking or leaving the tax-free threshold? Bigger difference than $20 a week, I can assure you!

    Bond

The housing commission can help with bonds for low income earners and the unemployed. I'm not sure what the exact qualifications are, but I think you can't earn more than $450-500 gross (weekly) and the rent must not be more than a certain % of your weekly earnings. Contact your local housing...

    Superannuation

Thanks RB. As it is, I was planning to combine all accounts into one, and only then investigate the SMSF option. I'll keep researching it, but so far it sounds complicated and expensive. :(

    State trustees

I dealt with them between 1991 and 1993, relating a small trust fund set up for me as compensation for a car accident when I was 6. The fund was released to me in full on my 18th birthday (in 1993), however I asked for some of the funds before my 18th birthday to help cover genuine cases of...

    Superannuation

Thanks Stucey. Is there any way to access one's super funds before retirement (self-managed super or otherwise), and without suffering a crippling disability or mutilation of some sort? If possible I'd rather use the money constructively, rather than have it sit in super funds with...

    Tax time

I elect not to use the tax free threshold if I start a new job during the year. Also, if someone does a lot of overtime in a average or low income job, they get a lot more of their income taxed at 47% on a weekly basis, but stay in the 30% bracket based on yearly income. Same principle...

    Tax time

Possibly your sequence number off your statement from last year? That's part of the verification process. Wouldn't say it's a waste of time though... incomplete tax returns can be saved for later completion, as long as you use the file's relevant TFN to re-enter the file. So if you forget to...

    Cars - are they worthwhile?

It all depends how far away you live from everything. For one job a while back, I caught buses and trains and rode my bike to work for four years because I knew no other way... while others would take a day off if their car broke down or had to be booked in for service. A lot of people simply...

    Tax time

I reckon unless you've got investments, shares, 20 zillion deductions, or anything else that isn't a basic income and tax difference, you might as well do your own. Having the eTax system available on the net, I've done my own the last two years, plus helped others do theirs, and generally...

    Superannuation

What's the best way to decide which is the most suitable superannuation fund for an individual? I've held a few full time jobs, and several long-term agency jobs over my 8 years in the workforce, and my allotments of super are spread far and wide across at least half a dozen accounts. I...
