Hawkins should go on.
I think Jack will definitely retire. Maybe if Lynch had been in the team the forward load could have been spread more, with Richmond (and Jack) having better seasons. That might have prompted another year for JR8. Also, a new coach might want to just get to work with...
Worse still… elevated Matt Priddis to Brownlow Medallist status. Denied two players (GAJ, Fyfe) becoming triple Brownlow Medallists in slightly different universes.
GAJ for me. Dusty has been great for the Tigers, pretty consistent and durable and 2017 was a phenomenal season. His finals record is outstanding. But there were years and years where GAJ was just far and away the best player in the league. I really think footy lost something when he headed to...
Some stats to the end of 2021. Make of them what you will.
Jack has played in 305 of a possible 341 games. He has kicked 715 goals at an average of 2.3 per game.
Tom has played in 302 of a possible 361 games. He has kicked 665 goals at an average of 2.2 per game.
In those 341 games the Tigers...
Lockett missed a few games over his career too. Played 30 or so games in three years in his middle St Kilda years and then finished with 20 in his final two St Kilda years.
IMHO, ideally one would’ve broken the record and then the other would’ve broken that record.
I can see Lynch getting no AAs actually and not winning a Coleman either. Will still possibly kick 60 goals a year but will be overshadowed by two other KPFs. Not helped by Richmond’s game style and possible continual brain farts and media outrage.
I agree that Hawkins has had a better career than Lynch, but then again Hawkins started out in a premiership contending side from game one, while Lynch spent eight years toiling away at the Gold Coast. Lynch didn’t see a winning season in those eight years. In fact, if this season had not been...
We'll all argue until we are blue in the face, throwing stats around that support "our" player and rubbishing stats that support "your" player. In a couple of years both will be retired and I think then most will objectively think the two had pretty equal careers, at least to this point in time...
I'll acknowledge my bias in selecting Lynch, and why wouldn't I - two flags in two years, has played a huge part in both. But I'll also acknowledge Hawkins stand-out 2020 season, where he was clearly the best KPF in the game.
Freo for mine. IIRC they were deers in the headlights in the first half. 1.6.12 to half time with some easy misses in there. Came back well in the third quarter, closed the gap to three points but then Hawthorn did what Hawthorn did.
You are right about Judd and Dusty, but Judd and Ablett I am not so sure your comparison holds up. Yes Judd was better early, but Ablett makes up for it by being better for longer.
It’s possible we could have matched or surpassed Geelong’s 3 in 5 record, but with the season delayed/cancelled who knows? If Richmond win this year most would say 3 in 4 is better than 3/5, but there’ll be whingers and whiners saying this season doesn’t count.
Probably Judd, but I think Dusty will have a better career from games 226 to 279
Judd stats games 226 to 279
Games: 54
Brownlow votes: 19 in 10 games
Kicks: av 11.5
Handballs: av 8.1
Disposals: 19.6
Marks: 5.1
Goals: 30
