Since the start of 2014:
- Gary Rohan has had zero goals and ten or less touches 25 times. Wingard's done it 3 times.
- Gary Rohan has kicked 4+ goals or had 25+ touches 5 times. Wingard's done it 24 times (including a match where he had 27 and 4).
Compared with Wingard averaging nearly twice...
Swan in serious conversations about GOAT players. FMD.
Buddy for mine, gap between him and other key forwards is much bigger than between Ablett and other mids.
Not meaning to play down how great GAJ is, but in the end, it's about kicking goals and Buddy is nearly impossible to stop in that...
How can people honestly rate BT? He consistently gets players names wrong, consistently makes badly incorrect forecasts of the action, and makes the call all about himself. He's way more interested in saying someone's name in a "funny" (read: not actually funny) way than actually calling the...
I see what you're saying but the ability to get yourself into a position where you break free of your man and get into space is a good skill to have. Given the amount of ball coming into Carlton's d50 that probably stands out even moreso.
Polec one of the best kicks on the run in the comp, more damaging on the outside than the other two and his contested possession rate is improving over the last couple of years. Consistency his main issue, but that's also somewhat understandable given he had a navicular fracture in 2015 and was...
Sandilands is a beast, massive HO numbers, good HO to advantage %, and can take a good mark. Ticks all the right boxes for a good ruck.
Cox was a mastermind in the ruck though. Could be matched in ruck contests on occasions, but would have his opponent beat around the ground 9.5 times out of...
I think people just assume because Wines is an inside mid, that he's not a match winner like a forward/mid can be.
Wines had 26 disposals (50% contested, 7 clearances, 7 i50s) and 3 goals v Freo in the 2014 Semi going head to head with Fyfe.
He got the 3 votes v Collingwood in round 15 with 33...
Been well held by Crowley in the 2014 Semi, and while he couldn't get much space on Macaffer in the 2013 EF, he did break free to kick 2 important goals for us that game.
Conversely, he was near BOG in his other 3 finals under Hinkley.
Sloane has been more consistent in his 5 finals, however he...
Close call on the two.
Sloane has the better ability to extract the ball, but Boak does more with it. Sloane has more ability to take on the tackler and charge through, while Boak's ability to sidestep and change the angles is elite.
IIRC Boak was number one in the comp in 2014 for % clearances...
I kind of agree. Westy does spend a fair bit of time in defence, think he won just under a third of his disposals in the back half of the ground this year, but he only does so as a loose. He never plays actual KPD like Carlisle and Henderson do. Does this mean that he isn't a swingman though?
Own team yada yada but probably a bit incomplete to leave Boak and Gray off the list.
Given his age and finishing top 10 last year, Cotchin should be on there too.
I'd consider being in the top 5% elite.
So given there is roughly 800 players in the AFL that would mean being in the top 40 would make you elite.
Is Hodge top 40. Absolutely.
EDIT: You could probably mount a pretty strong case for top 10% being elite.
Yeah, appearing when the game is there to be won is probably what Wingard is known best for. He's had a down month, and still averaging decent numbers.
Yeah I'm gonna have to agree with amcre. 43 and 2 goals is a phenomenal effort, no matter how they are won.
I won't say it is any better or worse than Wines, but I don't think they need comparing either. Both Wines and Macrae should play a fair bit of finals footy before the end of their careers.
No I don't, damn, you caught me. Macrae has been racking up the possies and has been showing some good signs, but even Macartney said he was sub as he wasn't doing the team defensive stuff. Wines has been doing that from day dot.
It's like Cotchin v Kennedy. Cotch may have 'a higher ceiling' but...
Lol, actually 1 of those 8 threads is made by a Port supporter.
I'm a big fan of O'meara, but he does get talked up a little more because he is the poster boy of the shiny new franchise.
Looking at the stats says Wines is the benchmark at the moment...
This has pretty much been done already:

Wines IMO as the elite contested midfielders are harder to come by than the classy outside mids, but I can certainly understand why Dogs fans would be thrilled with Macrae.
Also...
Jacobs has been doing a fair bit more as loose around the ground, but Lobbe has been far better at stoppages winning more HOs to advantage, getting more clearances, tackles and also pushing forward for goals. Pretty hard to split them at the moment, but I'd take Lobbe just for his clearance...
Both career and peak are debatable, as I posted earlier for Tredrea:
Which suggests that Tredrea's peak was probably better. Additionally, Tredrea had 2 more AA selections and has a premiership captain to add to his CV which tips the career towards him too.
Remember that Rioli is 4 years older than Wingard, and had the benefit of playing his whole career in a very strong team.
Wingard is in his third year, the first of which was in a poorly performing team.
Wingard has the bigger tank, and I reckon his bag of tricks is just as good as Rioli's. Add...
I gave my personal opinion, then followed it up with a statement of a reputable source.
Yes, they have glowing reports in patches, but that CD quote contains stats that show why Tredrea was the best, not just opinion.
