Does anyone know the names of some popular groups or artists from the 20s?

George Gershwin for me personally is one of the greats of not only the 1920s but of any era. He wrote some of the most sublimely brilliant music of the 20th century. When you read debates about the great song writers of the 20th century unfortunately this man is missing in the "beatles v the stones" debates. I will not bother you with a list of the brilliant music that he wrote/composed as he was prominant in 1910's through to his death in the early 1930's but if you get one piece of his music from the 1920's Rhapsody In Blue is a must. This piece of music was a mix of Jazz and Classical music and has a supreme melody and rhythm and a complexity that can only be admired. Even now when I listen to it it screams "roaring 20's" at me. If you have never heard it I recommend that you give it a fair listen.

Jazz artists like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Paul Whitman were popular. I have a fair chunk of 20's Jazz on remastered CD and I find them to be astonishingly vibrant considering that it is a style of music, that even then had it's sub genres, that has now passed the contemporary music world by.

I am not much of fan of The Blues but from what little I know it was in the 1920's that white audiences took it seriously. Others who are more familiar may be able to add more. Robert Johnson became ( I think ) more famous after his death but Bessie Smith, who a previous poster has mentioned, was huge. I have a CD of her recordings from the 1920's that is also remastered and she is well worth a listen.
